Twelve months ago today, and after 40 odd years as a smoker, I packed the fags up after discovering e-cigs, and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any urges whatsoever to go back to the dreaded weed (not that I haven't been tested on occasions).
The latest 'test' occurred about a month before Xmas when my wife fell down a flight of concrete steps and suffered a compound fracture to her ankle. As I attempted to help her off the floor I noticed that she was sat on her foot, which was lying at a 90 degree angle to her leg. It was a complete break and the bone was sticking out through her skin. It was a truly sickening sight. An ambulance was called - later followed by another two ambulance's after the first paramedic called for assistance – and between them they eventually (after three hours) managed to get my wife off the ground and into the ambulance and whisk her off to hospital where a team from the Trauma Unit was waiting. She was operated on within an hour of arriving at the hospital and has been in plaster – and bedridden of course - since that day.
Apart from the injury, the most worrying thing was that whilst the paramedics were attending my wife they were becoming concerned that that they couldn't feel a pulse in her lower limb and I was warned there was a possibility she might lose her foot. I was stunned and in shock. Thankfully however, as they got her into the ambulance, one of the paramedics managed to get a pulse and I was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
Just to add a footnote (no pun intended), exactly one week prior to my wife's accident on those steps, she had tripped and stumbled in the hallway at home and – putting her hand out to cushion the fall – she broke her wrist, which required an operation. Now, all in all, thats what I call bloody bad luck and a terrible end to the year 2013. The good news is, despite all the panic and worry involved, I have still not had a cig :0)

Well done Davess, such fortitude in the face of emotional difficulties you encountered, there is no going back to ciggies for you.

So sorry to hear about your wife's misfortune davess, but well done on being off the fags for a whole year, especially with all the stress you've had to contend with over the last few weeks! Great going, here's to the next 12 months

Thank you for all your congrats for myself and good wishes for my wife, it really is very much appreciated. Just an update re my missus. Today we spent the afternoon at the hospital in the fracture clinic where, amongst other things, we received the results of a check they did on whether my wife had osteoporosis (brittle bones) and unbelievably, to me, we were told she doesn't have that condition. I had convinced myself that that was the reason she'd suffered two separate breaks in one week. So it seems she really was just unlucky after all.
