The kick likely won't give out anything at all without a coil as it is only seeing an open circuit (unless it's broken). Which is why I said to have the coil in the atty.

Yes, you have to fire the Nemi or you won't get anything to read out (you do have 3 hands, right?)

The link to the meter don't work for me, but set it to volts DC, sometimes it will be a V with a little symbol next to it which is a solid line above a dotted line. You could always try V ac which will have a symbol like a sideways 'S' (a sine wave). If it isn't auto ranging, you will have a bunch of numbers you can select similar to the ohms part. Set it to the lowest number (probably 200). It does not matter which way round the probes are, you will kist see a minus reading instead of positive which is fine.

You can check the meter is reading volts dc correctly by whipping a battery out of a tv remote and testing that (don't do it with an 18650 just in case it gives a dead short due to being buggered). Mess around with the settings on the meter until it reads around 1.5v on that battery, then you are good to go on the atty.
