Hey! Just joined here, started vaping a few months ago & loving it.. however getting frustrated with cheapy ego batteries & 'gsh2' tops; my partner replaces the coil & wicks for me so we don't have to keep buying new atomisers (or are they cartomisers or clearomisers, ooft!!), & experimented with a few different ego batteries (incl. ego twist vv) but I'm obviously not getting a very good vape most of the time! When the battery's just been charged & the coil is fairly new it's pretty good but I want to find myself a decent vaper.. So I've been looking about.. not really tempted by any of the skinny things that look like ego's but are made by better companies, I'm kinda assuming they'll be just as volatile.. so really would like advice about how to choose a device that will give me a decent vape. I've been reading about mechanical mods, the idea of being able to control everything yourself, fix everything yourself etc. sounds very tempting, but I'm also thinking that maybe the likelihood of me starting a fire / out-burning the whole device / wrecking an important bit / etc.. is pretty high?? If I understand correctly then if I use a protected battery in a mech mod then I'm less likely to burn out the battery because it won't get overcharged so easily, it won't vape at too low a resistance or too high voltage, is that right? What are the other negatives to trying out mods? Is it hard to work out all the different variables so you actually get any vape out at all!? That would be a bit gutting.. I'm skint but also trying to be realistic, so I hoping to spend around £50 or less to get something good which will satisfy & also last me a good while; I'm very happy to be fixing or messing about with bits like putting in new coils etc. as long as I don't need a degree in physics or electronics to do so.. (I do have a basic understanding of circuits & batteries tho). I've posted this here rather than a mod forum because I am not long started & have very little experience of different kinds of vaping devices. It's quite possible that I'll be much better off with something more user-friendly than a mech mod but it's really hard to tell without buying them all & finding out haha!! Also there seems to be a big variation in price - it looks to me like I could get a really good but completely mechanical mod for £30 - £50, whereas a well-made device like (but better than) ego where it's basically all worked out for you looks like it would cost anything from £70 upwards..!! Also what are the dangers of buying second hand?? So advise me please captain vapers!! Any tips or ideas are very much appreciated Apologies if this question gets asked all the time, I really don't have a clue about internet etiquette & forums etc.. Thanking yous

Oh and just to clarify I'm not just after a decent battery, I need a decent whole device incl. battery & top (atom/cartom/clearomiser) - although I'm fine to buy the bits separately & not in a starter pack..

I can send you a mech mod for the postage as I'm having a clear out......
it's a clone and brass but I just don't like it....£5 postage ok? It's just for you as like you're a newbie....
I love my magneto - it just works and is less than £40 (or you can get a clone)
Classifieds are generally ok.....clearos may taste a bit funny but any probs you just send it back
Torchy the battery boy on ebay for batteries...good guy - better than risking slow boat from china
Hope that helps
Jane

Hi & welcome purkle Maybe try a Kanger Aerotank? can be had for £14.99 from Myepack great little atty, stainless steel and glass tank, easy to rebuild after a few trys or you can just buy replacement coil-units. I use it on a "Dingo" mech mod but there's loads of mech mods much cheaper (or free from the very generous Jane ) and they'll work just as well. Mech Mods+1 for "Torchy the battery boy" aka "big_f_d_d" on ebay for your batteries. (I use Efest 18350 IMR mostly).

Jane - wow, muchos thankos!! will pm ya shortly, would massively appreciate that! also cheers, will check out the magneto (edit.. that's the exact one I've been oggling over haha! good to know it works! what do you use for a tank on yours?).. aye I've seen the battery boy's name pop up a few times on forums, defo good to have a recommendation on stuff like that I've bought so many duds so far!!! Adam78.. nice one, had no idea you can get a glass tank for 15squid, that's amazing, & I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Kanger tanks, nice one, thanks a lot. Maybe I need to look a bit more into types of mods cos some of them seem to be completely mechanical & completely wreckable if you don't know what you're doin, whereas others just seem to be decent batteries which still safety-barrier the power etc.. eek lotsa readin to do! Anyway hopefully I might not need to experiment much now after v kind offer!!

purkleI don't use mech mods myself, but I think unprotected IMR are usually recommended, and that a decent charger shouldn't overcharge them. If you are going to build your own coils - which is a good idea - then you'll need either a multimeter or an electronic mod like a vamo or SVD. I have no idea what a gsh2 is like to recoil, but if you or your OH can put a fairly low res microcoil in there with a cotton wick it should give you an excellent vape on Jane's mech mod.

Giles - nice one, I didn't know that some of the electronic mods measured resistance, that's good.. I've been trying to work out buying a multimeter but a lot of them seem to only measure very high resistances, there seems to be a bit of an art to it.. we haven't really been playing about with different resistances yet, just using 2ohm pre-made coils which you then need to fit into the coil-holder bit which screws into the atomiser; they're not bad about £7 for 20 coils but aye, would prefer to start making them from scratch. Any advice on why cotton wicking is better? I think we've been using some sort of manmade wicks..

I'm also thinking that maybe the likelihood of me starting a fire / out-burning the whole device / wrecking an important bit / etc.. is pretty high?? Don't fret too much about mech mods/battery safety etc, just read up a little bit about do's & don'ts, show them a little respect and don't go super cheap. "Efest" or "AW" IMR batteries & a decent charger (I use the Nitecore I4 ) Nitecore I4Personally I just use the plain IMR "safe chemistry" batteries but you can get protected batteries (probably a good idea if you're going bigger than 18350). If you have the space inside or a telescopic mod you can add a safety fuse if you want, something like this. Safety FuseI had my mod in my back pocket a few days ago, forgot to lock the firing button. The Efest IMR drained right down to about 1.5v..got quite warm but didn't blow up or anything, popped it in the I4 & it charged right up again...happy days

I just have one of these, cheap, works great. edit: (just noticed in the blurb it says "6. Resistance?200??2000K?" but ignore that..it will test down to 0?) multimeterquick tutorial here TutorialMy mulitimeter has pretty much been retired from active duty though since I got one of these. atomizer-resistance-tester

I would recommend you get an MVP2 and an aerotank given your inexperience. I'm only 3 months in myself buti started with a basic kit, then an Evod battery, then an Evod twist vv, then mvp2 vw and then a mech mod. If you go straight to Ameche mod you may well be fine but you'll also need batteries, charger, possibly a kick and an atomiser. Although the mechs can be bought cheaper than a vw mod by the time you buy everything else you spend way more than for an MVP2, ignoring Janes kind offer of course. Basic kit to a mech mod is a fair old jump and if you have issues with it you'll be frustrated with only your current disapointing kit to fall back on without buying something else.
So mvp2 and aerotank plus Janes offer. You can't go wrong with mvp2 then you can look into whats best to go with your free mech over time.
Hope that helps.

purkle first off, welcome to AAEC. Very generous offer from @johanino, great to start you into the world of Mods. Don't panic about the scare stories you may hear, it's all just common sense in respect of what to use. You did say your spending about £7.00 for your Heads? have a look here and your £7.00 will get enough coiling/wicking material to last for a few months.. www.wireandstuff.co.uk/products/Vaping-Stuff.htmlOf course you only have to ask if you need any help in the future..

Purkie I'm going to check I still have the spring for your mech mod. I think one of the reasons I didn't like it was that the spring fell out or something. Going to check it all works before I send it to you It's telescopic so you can put (I think - if they fit) wee diddy 18350 batteries in from torchy (only place I buy batteries from ) or anything up to man size 18650's. Any probs with it post a pic on here (sure someone is bound to have one) and they'll help you fix it And yeah you'll need a good charger top bits wise I'm a lover of protank/davides but there's so much out there. I just ordered a new davide from ebuzz I think though there's a new davide here - www.smokshop.com/collections/cartomizers/products/anyvape-davide-king-glassomizer which takes protank heads and also aspire heads (more choice) and if you have a decent amount of minutes on your landline/mobile it's worth giving them a call for discount. Both are bottom coil and the aspire is raved about as is the protank/davide (very little difference between the two). The little puffer in wigan did have davides cheaper but their site seems to be down and I tried phoning them and no joy Protank2 heads take practice but if I were you I'd start with silica wick (better than the alternatives) and the evod/protank tutorial on wicking. You just need 0.2 kanthal and it does take practice but works. I can't yet micro coil (that's the one with the cotton wick) and it doesn't phase me Jane
