Well having just returned from yet another wet, windy and thoroughly miserable dog walk . . . I come home and see what other poor people are having to cope with on the news, then think really I've not got it so bad. I can't imagine the devastation this is causing to lives, homes and businesses. A lot of the help I have been seeing has been organized on a Voluntary basis, why hasn't the Government deployed troops sooner to back up the Emergency services who must be totally overwhelmed by this disaster. For the Government to say that there isn't enough money to assist both rural and urban areas is completely unacceptable. Surely the answer is to temporarily divert overseas aid and use our money, to help our people! Apologies for the rant, this entire situation is making me so cross.

As I have said on here previously, I always envied people who lived in Cornwall, I loved it when I went there and wanted to buy a place there. Needless to say, that envy has now gone, replaced by sadness and gratitude that I don't live there. The horror of having your home flooded year on year must be heartbreaking. My heart goes out to them.

It's the political bods only now coming out of the woodwork that also get my goat, where were they when something could have been done. Sorry to hear about your home mart166.

Totally agree with u when other places in the world have disasters we r 1 of the 1st 2 send aid......anyone sending money 2 help the people in the west country NO....prince Charles and Cameron have been there what a waste of money how much did that cost.....money that could have been used to help the victims flooded out of their homes. We send 11 billion in foreign aid...............11 BILLION!!!!!! just think what that could do 2 help the flood victims there is a petition if people want 2 sign www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2556282/Put-UK-flood-victim-FIRST-As-flood-hit-Britons-endure-unimaginable-hardship-Mail-launches-petition-calling-cash-taken-11billion-foreign-aid-budget-help-them.html

My commiserations to all who have suffered from the current spate of flooding. Now however those same properties may find themselves included in the "at risk" category used by insurance companies.....so not only are they hit with repair bills, but may well see the value of the said propeties fall as well.
Boy am I glad that we haven't suffered as badly in the north.

Ditto here! Last year we had a big downpour of rain during a storm. Several places around our village got so flooded that cars were sunk with water coming up to the windows and people had to be rescued. I personally saw one such rescue under a railway bridge as we attempted to go home. It turned out that the council had not been clearing drains, storm water streams near the railways etc. an obvious cost cutting exercise by the private contractors used to look after these things! I also remember a while back, seeing a TV programme that stated part of our problems in urban areas is due to homeowners concreting and tar acing driveways and gardens to make garden maintenance easier. Good point I thought, because if you cover over a large percentage of your available land with hard surfaces, the rain has nowhere to go but down inadequate drains.

Rant away Perps. What got me was the Thames was under threat of breaking its banks, the armed forces were sent in to sure up flood defences. Yes In the West Country they have been under water for weeks and have only just had help. One village has been cut of since just after Christmas, with kind people ferrying stranded people and supplies in boats. Where were the Army to help them. They finally got a pontoon so they could walk across the water week before last. They still can't drive anywhere and so are still stranded.

Some good news, our place did not take much damage (good flood defenses), looks like the toll is 2 carpets, and the river dropped 2 inchs last night, but the tv wont tell you that. Fingers crossed.

I feel so bad for the peoples homes who have been destroyed. More needs to be done to make sure it doesn't happen in the future. Not only are peoples homes destroyed they can't sell there home or even in the next 10years or so nobody will buy the house as they will be afraid of this situation. I feel for those suffering
