Spectacles accessories

Father time is catching up with Dom.
My eyes are getting old, such that I can't see close up to read any more.
I've been holding stuff further and further away, but I'm running out of arms length.

Last time I was in Boots getting my PG, the till receipt had an offer for an eye check -
only £10, when it should be £25 - deal! Boots do a good eye test too.
The whole thing took an hour and I was told I needed reading glasses.

Wandered back out for a look and saw that they had some for £25 - which is fine
since I'm not going to use them all the time, so they don't need to be fashionable or expensive

Anyhoo, I thought I might need a case, a cleany cloth and one of those bits of string to
hang them around my neck - I've got to look a proper fuddy-duddy now .

As you can see I'm not too up on the technical terms and I'm having trouble figuring
out where I might obtain such items.

So this a good subject to seek the collective wisdom of the knowledgeable folks here
at allabout.

Any help or suggestions welcome.

My old optician used to clean glasses with a soft cloth and methylated spirits, something I have done for years and it stops misting to, also lidl sells boxes of 50 disposable cloths for £1.50 they good too.

As for the string thing, pound shops ? sports shops sell them but expensive, fleabay maybe ?

try ebay or spec savers - I use the glass wipes of Lidl - or just simply wahing up liquid - all opticians have also sprays with a cloth - and if you have an ultrasonic cleaner for your vape gear - use that

did'nt they sell the glasses with a case - they should have done for that price

I popped my specs in my new ultrasonic cleaner for the first time last night, they came up beautifully clean and shiny!

Aah, Lidl - I'll have a look. We have a Lidl just round the corner and it's great.

I don't know if the specs come with a case or not, I assumed not for the price.

Thanks for the comments though, I just need the bit of string now.

Don't forget, you'll need windscreen wipers, for when you go out in the rain .


And if my bespectacled friends and family are anything to go by, I'd put a sign in a very prominent position, saying:

They're on my head!

Right, update time.
I've been away from base for a few days, so didn't get the specs till today.
Oh my god, how blind I've been

Anyhoo, they did come with a case, as predicted, albeit a fairly manky one.
Got some glass wipes from Lidl.
Still looking for a bit of string worthy of the price.

Me too . . . and keep my Vari's for home. That way I can have several pairs as I'm always losing/breaking reading specs.

You should have got a copy of your prescription Dom, see what it is  . . . it'll be a +1/+1.5/+2.00 etc - then you can pick yourself up a spare pair in one of the Pound places.

Once you get used to seeing your close work so much better, you won't want to be without a pair.

Back ups for back ups are also necessary for specs.

I'm +1.50 for close up, +0.25 for distance (apparently not bad for an old dodder )

I've tried out the Poundland ones but they're just 'magnifying lenses', and only seem to
make everything look further away - the equivalent of restoring more arms length.

I only need them for reading and then only for long sessions atm. I'm trying to avoid using
them too much as I want my eyes to be forced to work a bit. Like any muscle it's a case of
use it or lose it.
