@spikeyfridge ^^^^^^ what he said, just removing the plastic covering makes the battery unusable because it's an insulating layer, if the bare metal of the battery touches the sides of your vamo it could cause a short, although the protection in your vamo should stop this. Batteries with damaged insulation in a mech mod have been known to cause the mod to fire automatically, the circuit bypasses the switch. Also if you've removed the PCB the extra little disc on your battery this means you have an unprotected ICR battery, these are the ones that "vent with flame" if they go thermal which is why they're protected as standard.

Any damage at all can make a battery unstable. Better safe than sorry

Many protected batteries are just unprotected batteries with the protection circuit and connecting strip added, and then an extra heat shrink sleeve added. You ca ofen remove and use as an unprotected battery. Is there a make and battery number on the sleeve still on the battery. If no markings then what colour is the sleeve and the colour of the ring around the top connection as this is what identifies some batteries.

unprotected ICR are safe to use in a mod which has protection built in, such as the Vamo.

Maybe so, but if the battery is rubbish enough to fall to bits in your hands, I wouldn't use it for anything.
One thing it's not worth skimping on. I stick to Torchy for anything battery or charger related. And you can chat with him directly.

its a red one from focalecig, bought on impulse but i reckon false economy. batteries are not something i can get to grips with to be honest, and when someone asks what battery should they get, they get a myriad of answers. these be the onesthey didnt come in the plastic box but in bubble wrap.

They are fine @spikeyfridge. As long as you have not damaged the top and base of the original battery before protection was added. They are Sanyo 2600 mAh, if you look closely the number will be embossed on the side of the red sleeve. The insulation ring around the top should be pale blue. ( under the second button cap which is fitted) These are actually one of the best batteries (unprotected version) you can use in the vamo. The only one which will better it for life is the Panasonic 3400mAh, so you have made a good choice ) apart from being protected. Incidentally Sanyo are owned by Panasonic and share battery technology. These Sanyo batteries also have a very flat discharge curve, they fall to about 3.6 volts slowly and then rapidly down to 3.2 when the Vamo will cut off. You can use them as you would any other unprotected battery if you remove the protection circuit and leave the red sleeve intact. On another note, I take it they did not fall apart but you deliberately cut of the protection circuit!!!! And if they did fall apart then that was the modification by some factory which is poor and not the battery cell itself. Focale supply in bubble wrap without a box. Hope this puts your mind at rest.

fank oooooo ! one fell apart slightly so i did the rest, more for curiosity sake than destructiveness. the bits which come off are the top little disc, clear plastic wrap and the strip and round metal top bit, leaving a 'normal' battery. they have the red coat on them. not sure why i got protected cos i never use them

The unprotected ones were out of stock a few weeks ago so you may not have had the option to buy them.
