I don't bother with a blow torch. Just make the coil as tight as I can, mount it on an atty, check the ohms, the fire it with a mod, Once it's glowing hot stop firing and squeeze together with tweezers (don't touch the coil with the tweezers while it's firing). I get nice tight consistent coils.
I've tried with a blow torch and found this to be much less faff. I don't bother pre heating the wire as I find I can wind it ok without, A1 Kanthal 0.25 - 0.30.

Not much need for a blowtorch, it's only real use before coiling is to take some of the springiness away from the wire, can just do what @cornersruns mentioned above. Specially with 0.25 and upwards, the wire holds quite well i find, lower resistance wire like 0.2 i find is more springy and a blowtorch is a bit more handy. I myself still use one though as i prefer to hold the coil between tweezers and pinch it rather than pinching it on a mod. Each to their own
