Every time I update the beta it plays up and takes yonks (if at all) to load things like facebook or something else (met office? BBC) Is it worth it? What are the best alternatives on a mac

"Update the beta" elevates my eyebrows a little.
Firefox auto-updates, these days, and apart from a brief pause to check the compatibility of your plug-ins, the process is just about seamless and invisible. Can you check your version number, under "About Firefox" in the menu? Mine currently says 27.0.1. If yours says something different, especially if "beta" is mentioned, you maybe want to try re-installing the browser afresh.
Something I've noticed is that the longer I leave a Facebook tab open, the slower the Mac runs. Closing the Facebook tab and restarting the browser recovers enormous amounts of memory which FB has hogged to itself, and everything is fine again.

At this time best web browser for mac is Opera. Opera browser comes with built-in support for the most important and latest web standards in use at the present time, including HTML5, CSS 2.1, HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.1, WML 2.0, SVG 1.1 tiny, DOM 2, and ECMAScript. The latest version of Opera uses Blink, an open source fork of the WebCore component of WebKit, an web browser engine also used by the Google Chrome and Chromium browsers..... i hope this help.
