Nicotine has an important part to play in alleviating psychiatric symptoms. Also whilst smoking is not illegal and e-cigs are completely different to traditional cigarettes would it not be better to do a harm reduction programme rather than throw the baby out with the bath water? Hi E,
I believe that the national tobacco control plans to have a smoke-free NHS by March 2015. However, mental health services will for the meantime, be able to have smoking in designated outdoor smoking areas.
Kind regards

Hello Jane,
I think we'll have to go along with the NHS Grampian Policy. I did hear that smoking may be banned even outside in all NHS premises including mental health units but I'll ask Derek for clarification.
If this happens it may be that people won't be able to smoke in the garden area.
Let's see what PD says.

Can they legally do this? Stop psychiatric patients - some of whom may be in hospital against their will - from smoking? tobacco? It's not illegal

Hi OP, I work in mental health and have experience of various units nationally - the stance seems to vary quite a lot. There are some units where cigarette use has been banned *completely*, there are some where it is permitted. There are also some where it has been 'banned' but a blind eye is most definitely turned for various reasons :-) There are some very real discussions currently about e-cigs.... early days, involved in some of these myself, and watching with interest.... Positions seem rarely concrete here (except in medium/higher secure services due to e cigs being an ignition source and potential risks here) - partly, I suspect, as a result of some interesting ongoing legal challenges about use of real cigarettes... j450n

My other half works with people with "needs" eg drug drink problems, lot of them now using e-ciggies in one form or another, but only by their own research, most of her co-workers still smokers and not a clue about vaping, she obviously knows through putting up with me and points them in this direction for more advice, shame her employers cannot wake up to what is reality these days.

I would love to meet your OH's employers You would not, not going to name through fear of legal action, but a bunch of left wing politicaly correct people who cannot see the real world and what is happening to real people, as long as they tick the correct boxes and cover their own bums, do not give a toss what happens. Makes you so angry that we are paying these people. MP

Well not everyone who is in hospital against their will is ward-based. So they could go off premises to smoke. Personally I'd see it as counter productive to not let people go outside the buildings to smoke, to force them off-site completely, totally needless. Though equally I think it would be a mistake to see a return to the days of smoking rooms on the wards, for a number of reasons. Legally, I'm not sure on the situation, though there are all kind of legal behaviours that aren't permitted on mental health wards As for e-cigs they would be a great benefit to mental health service-users I think. More evidence and research would make it easier to promote this. I'm not sure of current policies for the hospitals in my area as I don't work there anymore though.

I think it is very unlikely they can prevent smoking outside the hospital, car park or somewhere outside. I would continue smoking in these areas if I was a smoker, and now I am a vaper I would definitely snub any ban and let them try and stop me if they can (outside the building obviously).
I guersss there is a case for carting the ASH document recently put up here, or certainly the conclusions arrived at near the end of the piece
