I've had several brands of inkjets including Brothers and Epsons. I currently have a Canon which does printing, scanning and faxing. It's great. I got it from Argos for £35, and when I bought it the salesperson asked if I wanted to add spare inks to my order. I asked how much and he said for a colour and b&w cartridge ..... £35. It's as cheap to throw the bugger away and buy a new one! Madness Quite agree with you oneday. Yesterday I went shopping for 2 black cartridges for my Canon Pixa MP540 £28.99 . If I had forked out the cash for them , you can bet your bottom dollar the colour carts will need replacing, not because I use them for colour, but they are used to 'clean' the machine, I was told this by the owner of a small reputable Ink Store owner. I didn't buy them and now unplugged my printer and put it upstairs with the other multifunction defunct HP printer. I give up, in future if I need anything printing I will pop into the Library and use theirs, I don't use it a lot anyway. Best printer I ever had was an Epsom Black print only, worked like a dream for years with very cheap carts, they don't make them now. Second thoughts, I will advertise them both on Freecycle for collection.

What hasn't been said is that you can refill the ink cartridges yourself. Saves a fortune I got the following kit www.jrinkjet.co.uk/cartridge-refill-kits-c-2.html from amazon (though now you can't get a colour and a black together - you have to buy them seperate) and the instructions were easy enough. About £12 of ink lasts me easily a year. No probs. Comes with the drill you need to drill the hole in the cartridge and I have a canon. Now I just get more ink from Tesco/PC rip off

+ 1 for a brother, mine (dcp350c) has lasted a few years and it does a self clean once in a while, the inks from inkjet world (online and local) cost around £15 the set, lasts ages and the amount of printing we do is about 100 pages per year the latest with wifi is around the £70/80 area

If all you want is a cheapo printer for text and simple graphics, the bottom of the range Cannons are cheap and cheerful, and the cartridges can be easily refilled 20-30 times before replacement. I got one two years ago for printing invoices and the likes and it's still on the go. Printed a hell of a lot from it and still on original cartridge. Lexmarks can be refilled as well, as can HP, but they seem to offer more problems.
Brother lasers are good as well, and you can sometimes get them cheap online.

How has this come back to life? ???
I have a Canon Pixma and use "knock-off" cartridges.
It costs me 10% the cost of running a bleedin HP load of rip-off.

I used to do a lot of printing, and the HP Laserjet was great. However, since I gave up that business, and now only do a bit of private printing on a Deskjet I've had nothing but trouble. Have currently got an HP Deskjet 4580 and when it worked it was fine... apart from the regular 'paper feed' problem. The inks have recently run out, and have received replacements from 'Printer Cartridge People' but it doesn't want to know. So I guess I'll have to buy the 'rip off' branded ink. So my question is... does anyone know of a printer that doesn't keep jamming and the ink refills are at a reasonable cost? I would stick with what you know HP laserjet have a look on ebay , check out sellers that have a 100% feedback , sometimes listings might contain words like workgroup or have a N at the end of the model number which indicate they have a jet direct card (Print Server) in them so they are network ready some sellers will list page count and supply printer with toner Toner prices start from £15 approx. lifespan 10,000 pages per toner cartridge, drawbacks some of these printers weigh a ton and are large in size
I purchased a HP2300N from ebay seller printtraders July 2012 still using the toner cartridge that was supplied with printer cost of printer was £55. These printers are largely ignored by most people due to size and the adverts don't mention wifi
