I had a couple of egos in my car over winter. I didn't use them for months then found that they had run out of charge. Didn't prove to be a very good back up

Depends on the Battery I have a few 18650's which are reconditioned once fully charged I leave for a month in a cool place then test the drop most of them drop from 4.2 to 3.8 so not dropping drastically my Panasonic 3400 protected batteries stay around 4.1 for the same amount of time. I now have around 50 18650's in circulation so am testing often to weed out bad ones .

Sorry but give it a week and it will be 60 in circulation now my friends found that I'm using 18650's they just keep turning up. As I say I get a lot of reconditioned batteries which when gone through testing they get put into circulation and family use them as well as me. I use to work with computers and a few of my friends still do so when they get a duff laptop battery in they send it round to see if I can get it going if not I strip them down.

The advice I have been given @spikeyfridge is that for long term storage (e.g. a year) it is best not to have them fully charged - battery suppliers usually keep them at 3.8 or less I think. When fully charged, though, a good quality battery will still take a long time to lose much charge - a month or two to lose even 0.1 volts I'd guess from my experience.
