Well, I have been putting it off for weeks, but today we decided to sort through all my clothes and either pack, bin or send to charity shop. I cannot believe how much stuff I had squirrelled away in my wardrobe!! Some things I had completely forgotten I had bought and at least two items I have never worn! we are only two thirds through the clothes and haven't even started on shoes yet. Gawwwwd, how the hell I will manage to buy new knickers, let alone any more new outfits for quite sometime is going to be a hell of an ask.

Gawd, it's scarey isn't it? I do this about once a year......and it is unbelievable how much stuff I have. It is SOOoooo hard though to decide what you are never going to wear again, although the weight gain seems to concentrate the mind a bit! LOL!

If our offer is officially accepted, mid June I need to start now though as due to circumstances I'll be doing most of it on my own. I've already got rid of loads of clothes/shoes/handbags but still the cupboards and drawers are overflowing. As this is a HA house we need to strip it bare, even lift the laminate and take down the curtain rails

I know exactly what you mean Dolly, I have been having a sort out too, we have to laugh at ourselves don't we,we women. I have 3 drawers full of every style, colour and in 2 sizes to fluctuate my weight gain/loss, why, I ask myself, have I got a fetish for knickers? Some of them I have never worn yet. And don't get me counting nightwear, dressing gowns and bath robes, I must think they are never going to sell them again. Lets face it I am just a spendthrift hoarder when it comes to these items of clothing. Have given 4 bags of tops/jeans/handbags and boots to charity and am nowhere near finished. I gave a stack of household equipment, books, gardening tools, tv's to Freecycle, no sooner had I posted them the phone was ringing and people were at the door collecting the stuff, mostly young people just moving to their first flat together. Nice to help people out .

I'm seriously thinking of downsizing as I acquired the 5 bedroom family barn in my divorce and it's draining me completely financially. We've been here 17 years, every bedroom is full both of furniture and crap. I'm dreading going through it all. On the plus side I suppose I won't have to buy new furniture, just pick the best bits and scrap/donate the rest. Now my youngest has moved out there's only me and my eldest left and I know she won't be here forever. I live in Herne bay and work in Canterbury so I think it's time to 'cut my cloth according to my pattern' as my mum used to say and get a smaller place nearer work. I worry if something big went wrong in this place, like a roof leak or boiler failure I simply wouldn't have the resources to fix it. The only snag is that house prices are higher in canterbury so I'd need every penny of value from this house, which in turn will require some investment to tart it up a bit. Big decisions but the time has come I think, so 17 years worth of crap, here I come...daunted much!

I have a sort out of stuff usually every year. Household items I donate to a charity called Soldiers Off The Street, on their website they arrange collection, which is handy.

Due to us having to pack all our stuff away we had a sort out, all was going well until i got to the wife's cupboards with her clothes.........some of them dated back too the 80's I said to her "what you waiting for them to come back into fashion or something".....she just frowned.....after a long quabble with her she finally said "ok fine, i will give them to charity".......i replied "I know charities are desperate for things like clothing but they ain't that desperate"

Blownupdolly - told you that moving is such a great thing to get rid of stuff - don't be ashamed - we all accumulate things - it's amazing how quick it happens - we moved the last time 4 years ago - and had given and thrown awayy loads - but we still have far too much stuff - really don't know where it's coming from

Please explain the need for a clearout to my OH...........she could open a shop with the shoes, handbags, knickers and make up she has everywhere.

charon - a lot of men would claim that - have you actually checked your own shoes and cloths - hubby for example has a collection of cables - it's not always us who collect - and come on the few handbags and shoes are a must

I've lived in my house for over 22 years... last year when Mr Lairey moved in, I had to make space for his stuff 3 bedroom house and a garage, all to myself for many years meant for about 15 bin bags full of stuff to the charity shop, not to mention the 3 car loads to the dump an Mr Lairey still complains that the house is too full... he's right, but I got rid of so much stuff last year that I can't quite face anymore clearouts just yet
