Why are you against increased use of e-cigarettes?
If they were properly regulated as a medicine and we knew what was in them and the dose of nicotine, then they might play a useful role in stopping smoking. But they aren't, so at the moment we don't know their safety or the dose they deliver. They are often aimed at children with their flavourings – not only menthol but cookies and cream and bubblegum. They are sold rather cheaply and many of them are made in China, so I worry about what is in them. We have even got a verb for e-cigarette use: to vape. I am worried about normalising once again the activity of smoking. This matters particularly with children and adolescents.

They can't accept something that is staring them in the face... a way to get people out of smoking... but it's going to cost them money... and I mean 'personally', not just to the exchequer (IMO).

I have had a google alert for e-cigarette news set up for the last fortnight or so. The number of stories, especially from the US, that are outright b*llocks is quite unbelievable. I don't know why I do it to myself. I sit at my laptop quietly seething. I do have to have a vape to calm myself down, so its not all bad

Let’s translate that into English: “If we could hand over control of the market to my friends in the pharmaceutical industry, and also let the MHRA play too, we could stop pretending we don’t know what’s in them and that we actually give a crap about dosage”. As we all know, only expensive pharma products can possibly help smoking cessation. Even though the non-pharma e-cigarette is making NRT look very silly in that department. But we can’t have that, can we?
