Actually, nelsonbloke, Windows 8.1 has an easier option: RIGHT-click in the very bottom left corner and a *very* useful menu pops up Select: Task manager > startup and you'll see a full list of programs/processes that are set to run when you boot your computer - and the impact each one has! You can disable obvious ones and google the cryptic ones. If you don't feel confident, just disable them one at a time and reboot each time. If it does something *oops!*, re-enable it and try again. It sounds a bit cumbersome, but it's really simple once you try it.

The quickest way to speed up any windows based PC is to press both the windows key and R together to bring up a prompt. Type msconfig and then choose the Startup tab. The more bumf you can rid of on there the better. It is knowing what is bumpf though, I am self taught and manage adequately, but you can guarantee I would delete the most important thing lol

It takes fractions longer to start without pre-loading sammy13

Oh no worries on that one, that is done, I hate adobe with a passion, you need to update so you do then everything goes boobies up. I think my pc is pretty much empty, and startup minimised etc, but something is taking ages at start up, I just don't know why, it only started recently, I have a new internet though and I am not impressed with that either, so perhaps that is causing the issue.

Gonna bang this in here cause it seems like tech savvie folk are here...
Got a samsung n140 net book sat doing nothing because one of the small folk (kids) in my house decided the plug socket for the charger need to be pushed into the back of the screen, it boots up for a second and the goes white...
Will a new screen fix this?
If so how easy to do myself and cheapest place?
Cheers

If it were me I would just go here www.ubuntu.com download 14.04 then stick Ubuntu on for free. Windoze ain't been any good and full of errors since version 3.1 IMO, Linux is fine if you like a bit of a challenge - fast, free and well supported, but for the average computer user it simply doesn't cut it. Many 'standards' like MS Office won't run, so you have to adapt to a new environment. Now, I've *loathed* Apple software since Quicktime took over my 1st PC (W95 - long gone & certainly not missed...) I just don't like their 'walled garden', 'you vill do it OUR vay' attitude, but hey! I certainly don't run down Apple - many people like a controlled, safe environment. I do think it's one heck of a sweeping statement to damn 'Windoze' (how 1990 ) as 'full of errors'. *ANY* O/S has the capacity to drive you to tear your hair out! Windows 8.1 took me about 2 days to adjust to, after W7, and I find it remarkably stable. None of that touch screen malarkey, mind you Not ONE blue screen, startup in under a minute, lots of back-compatibility. As they say, Your Mileage May Vary...

You don't delete anything, you just disable things, one at a time, and re-enable them if it mucks up startup. Google the obscure ones: someone, somewhere (probably with a brain the size of a small planet) will describe its function and if it's a good or bad idea to stop it running. Agree 100% with stopping Adobe, Symantec, oh, and about 100 other 'resource hogs'! Incidentally, W8 runs much better on PCs with limited resources (e.g. slow processor) than W7. Fact. Finally, buy more memory (RAM) to get the best bang for your buck - it's unbelievably cheap, these days and things whizz along

Windoze ain't been any good and full of errors since version 3.1 elementary OS work nice also.....and less memory ram...but most of the people use windows because of compatibility with some games or programs...linux sound very complicated for most of the people when is not ,IMO...other advantages of linux : free of charge ,no antivirus needed ,most of the programs are free...etc etc...

Go for it, jackcustard - If it doesn't work, you've lost £27, and I guarantee the experience will teach you something new, if nothing else! If it does work... 1 happy bunny
