A good start is to stop adobe right in it's tracks. It takes fractions longer to start without pre-loading sammy13 No, that's a common fear/misconception. You don't delete anything, you just disable things, one at a time, and re-enable them if it mucks up startup. Google the obscure ones: someone, somewhere (probably with a brain the size of a small planet) will describe its function and if it's a good or bad idea to stop it running. Agree 100% with stopping Adobe, Symantec, oh, and about 100 other 'resource hogs'! Incidentally, W8 runs much better on PCs with limited resources (e.g. slow processor) than W7. Fact. Finally, buy more memory (RAM) to get the best bang for your buck - it's unbelievably cheap, these days and things whizz along Buy a SSD drive no worries on getting win8,things really wiz with one lol on downside had to redo Daughters friends win8, 2 problems if you buy a lappy mainly, if you have Norton and i starts acting slow net wont connect properly, uninstal Norton, besides use avg/avast all free do same job downside 2 you can add apps change appearance yay, wrong!! had the licence key for Win8 wont allow it as its an oem licence wtf! just remember Win 8 was originaly designed for mobiles,so if you like scolling through umpteen tiles you will like it...after doing this lappy am utter convinced i prefer Win 7

Gonna bang this in here cause it seems like tech savvie folk are here... Got a samsung n140 net book sat doing nothing because one of the small folk (kids) in my house decided the plug socket for the charger need to be pushed into the back of the screen, it boots up for a second and the goes white... Will a new screen fix this? If so how easy to do myself and cheapest place? Cheers you could always use it on external screen for time being it has a rgb port on left side, plus makes sure they didnt naff anything else

Hi andy01424, I agree about the SSD - I'll get one when I feel like re-installing Windows, for sure. Regarding navigating umpteen tiles, fortunately W8.1 provides an easy (if undocumented!) way of avoiding them by booting straight into desktop. Right-click anywhere on the open area of the taskbar, (it's worth looking at all the options here, if you like telling Windows what to do instead of vice versa ) click on properties > navigation > then check the box next to 'When I sign in or close all applications on a screen, go to the desktop instead of start'. Click OK, then reboot. Windows will take you right into Desktop. Job done.

Incidentally, I quite like the 'tiles view' for some things. I keep shortcuts for most of my favourite apps there, for example. Using the Windows key shuffles the view between desktop and tiles, as any fule kno.

I don't understand much of this thread.
I am however due to do my 2-3 year desktop new build quite soon and will end up with Windows 8 most probably.

Job done. it was friends lappy i was doing ,not been a fan of win8 since its launch, hence why never interested in the nokia phones lol as for ssd,i got a samsung evo 256gb for main drive, for pc,so bit easier than a laptop as you would need a enclosure but there cheap on fleabay, copied all the windows and games i had in under 10 min no faults.keep all other stuff on physical hd drives, only pain is eraseing it,you have to make a dos disc, run it then unpower ssd then type a short line then it erases in under 10 secs lol www.pixmania.co.uk/solid-state-drive-ssd/samsung-840-evo-mz-7te250-solid-state-drive-250-gb-internal-2-5/21526271-a.html

Main thing that annoys me about windows installs is windows update! Never behaves itself properly when reinstall PCs, done two windows 7 installs, four windows 8 installs and one Linux install, mostly at work....only Linux was a doddle.

I can "do" hardware and use certain non-mainstream applications quite well (part of my job) but the actual Windows bit is a mystery. The last build has been great. SSD, blu ray, double screen... the lot! Thanks.

I use clonezilla to make image backups at various points when installing software too on main computers where software often doesn't play nice together! Easier to just go back few steps than sort out the mess at times.
