I decided to make a separate thread instead of just posting it on the moving house thread, as those who are not moving probably won't read in there.
I discover to my shock and horror yesterday, that Royal Mail (the modern day Dick Turpins!) want to charge a minimum price of £25 per person to redirect mail!! Does anyone know of an alternative to using them? I have done a google search but it seems it's only businesses that are catered for and not private residents. When I lived in Sydney, I was a post lady. I know EXACTLY what redirected mail involves as their system is based on ours. All that is done is putting your mail in a different pigeon hole! Hardly warrants that kind of price. What a nerve!

Royal Mail redirection service for consumers (price based on last name):
Up to 3 months £24.99 Up to 6 months £34.99 Up to 12 months £54.99
For businesses it's a lot more (£120 -£350!)
Might it be cheaper for you to send notification of your change of address to everyone that you might be expecting mail from?

Unless I read it wrong. You are right. I will definitely be making sure I don't miss anyone out. I just worry I might have a long lost relative who has left me millions in their will and I won't get the letter!

As postmodern said per surname Need your mail delivered quickly to your new home? Our Redirection service allows you to redirect to any UK or overseas address for 3, 6, or 12 months from £24.99 for each last name. Additional benefits:
- Get great home mover offers - Reduce your risk of ID fraud
Before you start your application make sure you have a credit or debit card registered at your old address. You will also need the names and dates of birth of everyone who wants their mail redirected, and the full address and postcode of your old and new addresses. Used to be free for 6 months bandits!!!!

Their latest pricelist (page 8) says "per last name". You could also pop back to your old place and check if the new tenants have received any mail addressed to you. PS Good luck with your move

Oh I see. I did misread it. But even so, like you say, it used to be free!. Just another instance of lining the shareholders pockets by fleecing those who can I'll afford it. It wouldn't be so bad if you could justify it in some complicated process, but it's not!

Dolly,
When I last moved, 14 years ago now, I had to pay RM to have my post redirected, and it really was money well spent....
They forwarded a letter from a pension company that I had completely forgotten about and that is now paying me £100 per month, and has been doing so since I was 55 (6 years ago)
Well worth the price of a few packets of cigarettes..
