any cotton wool that's organic/100% natural (i.e no synthetic component), and UNBLEACHED should be fine

I actually don't think it matters if it's organic or not.....

I find that on occasion cotton can taste a bit iffy, this usually only lasts for 10-15 minutes and then it's fine.
When boiling cotton it should squeezed then left to dry naturally, I don't bother now as it's way too much trouble. Take it out the bag and vape.
Greigster is right, if your hands are not 100% clean the cotton will absorb the dirt/oil and odours that may affect the vape.

so no more asda cotton wool

I use cotton wool from a pound shop.

No problems at all.
