So there seems to be a problem with the coils i made the other day :'(Firstly i believed they would come out at 1.8ohms, they all seem to be reading 2.1-2.2 ohms. So today i decided to try a few and unwrap some of the coil in the hope of a lower ohm...some read 1.8-1.9 before inserting in the tank but once filled...fired...back to 2.1ohms confused!

but 2.1 ohm is fine - experts please help but in my experience : coil without the top part is lower ohm than with and then there is another slight increase in the tank - my explanation is : that there is more pressure on the coil in the filled tank - but there might be a better explanation

If on a protank the chimney could be pushing down on the wick slightly. the difference between 1.8 and 2.1 ohms is slight so won't really affect the vape, regards Paul.

Surely the liquid gives a small resistance as well which could explain this

@mrsmac I use 6 wraps of .25 Kanthal on a 2mm mandrel microcoiled, comes out 1.8 ohms pretty much every time. Hope this helps, Regards, Paul.

prr that's interesting cause I tried to follow the chart from romelee and used 9 wraps of 0.25 on a 2mm drill bit...second thoughts I have queried with the other half the size of the bit lol Secondary after making the coils, when inserting them I put them on a nail as the drill bit gets stuck if I use that and after taking the nail out, the coil ends up warped?

The coil can end up warped if the bit isn't a tight enough fit or the coil hasn't been torched but it doesn't matter, need to figure out why your ohms are changing though, that's not right. Juice makes no odds as the wire is just the same, maybe a bit of a loose connection on one of the wire screws?
As said though the ohms are fine for vaping at that level.

Thanks enjay, I have ordered a mandrel now and will also need to order the needle recommended to see if that help, they are not torched but held in the flame and pressed. Guess I will have to keep trying. I tank once I get the mandrel I can be more certain that I am using a 2mm circumference to begin with!

As enjay said, the resistance should change if everything is right. Putting the tank together or adding juice adds no resistance to the coil. The electricity takes the easiest route possible, that is through the coil. Not the atty or juice??? It may be a good idea to find out what's going wrong with the resistance jumping up before ordering more wire. @mrsmac can you get to a meet? Where abouts in London are you?

Hi seniorphil,I've been wanting to get to a meet for ages and see there is one this weekend, I'm in south london but the only reason I hadn't been is because I've got a 5 month old who is very clingy and won't stay with anyone

Mrsmac I really wouldn't worry about small variations like that, I use 9 turns round a 1.8 screwdriver measure them and they come out at 2.0 - 2.3 ohms put them in a tank and they can drop a bit or rise a bit but I'm using 2 different vv3's to check ohms, they rise and fall a bit during vaping but still vape ok, so don't worry just vape

The type of juice your using can alter the ohms that you get on a dry coil. I can dry test a coil on my rose or another one of my atties and get say 1.3 but when its juiced up it will be 1.5. Try aiming for a couple of points lower when testing dry and you should get what your aiming for.
