Thanks enjay, I have ordered a mandrel now and will also need to order the needle recommended to see if that help, they are not torched but held in the flame and pressed. Guess I will have to keep trying. I tank once I get the mandrel I can be more certain that I am using a 2mm circumference to begin with! A 2mm drill bit is only a quid or two from local hardware shops, you could get one for your own. As for the ohms, if I'm aiming for about 1.8ohms I'm happy with anything between say 1.5 and 2.1 or so, I don't think you'd notice much of a difference between them. You know you can use your device to get the coil red hot, release the switch then squeeze with your tweezers too. Works as well as anything else. But yeh, I think I'd take the thing apart and check the wires are firmly held, also check the coil is off the deck and not catching at all. Most coils can be rescued with a bit of fiddling.

Mandrels are great little things, cheap as chips, has a nice rubber handle so you get a good grip and as steps of 1.5mm-2mm-3mm and so on.....great little things for making coils. I have had this one for ages: (size small): Clicky

Hopefully my mandrel will show up tomorrow and I've located my pointed tweezers so can squeeze the coil in situ as it's a protank head I'm working with!

Mrsmac i use these tweezers as i find thin tip tweezers can make the coil awkward to hold the coil evenly in place, ain't cheap but they are great and don't get hot easily as they are quite thick so it takes longer for them to get hot. I only mentioned them as i think if certain tools make life easier than why not.

I don't even know what a Mandrel is. I just went into a hardware store and asked for some 2mm drill bits. .....as they were ridiculously cheap, I bought 5 and then some of other sizes too. Should be useful if I ever do some micro-DIY.

Looks like an aerial for a 1989 mobile phone.
It has graduated thicknesses, yes?
Clever.
and the original use... making atomizer coil heads in Egyptian time.
