I managed with a cigarette lighter. Cheaper than a blow torch Even though I have a blow torch for plumbing, I used the gas hob in the kitchen. Its was easier than dragging out my toolbox, its just too heavy.

Don't use asda or tesco cottonwool their 100% cotton is perfumed. Sainsburys, Boots,Wilkco, and Waitrose seem fine.

Lucky for me i happen to have a big bag of sainsburys cotton wool, i've used a lighter to flame wire before and it was alright, just need the thicker kanthal. Is it important that the coils are touching each other?

Hi. I got a cooks blowtorch from the range, I think it was less than a tenner, might be worth a look if you have one near enough.

Is it important that the coils are touching each other? A lighter doesn't produce a hot enough flame, so doesn't really get the wire to soften up and squeeze together (which conveniently answers your other question too!). If you are building on a dripper or something like the Kayfun where the coil is exposed, you can power up and then switch off before using tweezers to squeeze the sraps together, but in a Protank head it is more tricky although it can be done with some thin tweezers.

Hmm i suppose a mini blowtorch is cheap enough to justify the purchase. Am i right in saying i need a 2mm drill bit or is it smaller?

You don't have to use a drill bit any metal rod that's the size you want will do. Small screw drivers, nails, very cheap skinny tent pegs, skews, big paper clips, skinny coat hanger type wire,...

Oh ok, so there isn't a definitive size that a microcoil for a kanger head needs to be?

I always use the gas hob, I have a blow torch but I find it easier using the gas hob. Also I use a 1.5mm drill bit.
