I'm seeing a lot of videos with people using cotton and micro coils, well practically every video I watch. Is no one using silica anymore?
I thought cotton burned really easily? And what exactly is a micro coil?

If the cotton is saturated with Eliquid then the coil won't get hot enough to burn it, A micro coil is small tightly wound coils formed into a small tube, through which you Thread the cotton.

As markm said, it is a lot harder to thread cotton wool through other types of coil and micro-coils are very easy to do, they last a long time and are very repeatable (turn out the same each time).

Yep and you can't wrap a chimney coil with silica

So would it work in a protank head? Is it just standard cotton wool?

Just had a go at recoiling a protank head using the tools at my disposal, the coil isn't great and it's reading 3.5 ohms but it seems to work alright and the flavour is definitely more pronounced than the stock head in my aerotank, so I'm officially intrigued. I had to use .2 kanthal as it's all i had.

So would it work in a protank head? Is it just standard cotton wool? Try and use organic as it is not sprayed with the really nasty pesticides, non-chlorine-bleached preferably, I haven't found non-bleached organic.

What, like nicotine? lol Lets face it, whatever you do will be hard to be nearly as bad as all the smoking you used to do, I just grab a big bag of cotton balls out of asda and vape away.

Follow Super-Shiny's guide on micro coiling a protank..... allaboute-cigarettes.proboards.com/thread/32391/microcoil-cotton-guide?page=1 and you'll be fine.... The kanthal should come in a day or so and then you just need the rest of the bits. Get the blow torch from amazon ....sorted

you can do it - go for it - the more often you do it - the easier it is

I know that this has been posted before but I wonder if it should be stickied somewhere so that people can be made aware of it again! Luc Bigjohn (no sniggering at the back please!) has come up with a little bit of software that you can use to calculate the number of wraps required for a coil (or microcoil - tick the little MC box) and give you the option of adjusting the internal diameter of the coil too. With three different types of wire and two different methods of winding the coils, I find this really useful! Luc Bigjohn - Making Resistance

It's crucial that you anneal the wire before you make the coil... heat it with a cooks blowtorch until its red, then wind it round a 2mm or smaller drill bit, tightly... then piinch it lengthways with some tweezers and heat it again... so the coils are all definately touching. Put the drill bit back through the coil while you fix it to the atty.

I had to use .2 kanthal as it's all i had. You had the same result as me when I tried the previous night. .2 has to much resistance per meter for a micro coil of about 7-9 wraps, depending on drill bit size. My second attempt was .3 kanthal 8 wraps on a 3/32nd bit (2.3mm) and came in at 1.8 Ohm. I have a pic, I might as well show it. Not perfect by any means but better than the 1st The cottom was just Boots babycare range, but tasted much better than silica. chykensa put a nice little software app that I will have a good look at. Super-Shiny also has a chart that I used to help me here coiling chart
