..personally i think this day should be a national holiday across Europe and the US/Can... so no one forgets the sacrifice: I agree 100%, andy01424. I did my own tour of northern Normandy last year and there are some brilliant museums and memorials. My personal favourites were the Musée du Débarquement at Arromanches, which has incredible models of the Mulbery harbours, and the Musée du Pegasus Bridge, where 3 British gliders landed in one field to secure the bridge from demolition. You simply can't visit them all, there are so many. I have a fondness for 'unsung heroes', and in Arromanches there's this memorial to the man who designed the floating roadway and 'kite' anchors which successfully secured the British Mulberry harbour: Major Allan Beckett, M.B.E.

Oops - forgot this statistic (from Wikipedia):
"Port Winston [the British Mulberry] saw heavy use for 8 months—despite being designed to last only 3 months. In the 10 months after D-Day, it was used to land over 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tonnes of supplies providing much needed reinforcements in France."
Wow!

Been watching and listening to the veterans that have gone across... what wonderful characters they are, telling it like it is. Makes you wonder what our world would be like now if their 'lost' pals had still been with us these past 70 years.
As Des said 'Total Respect'.

I went over with 4 friends earlier in the year to pay my respects and see it all in the flesh so to speak. Everybody should be made to experience this. I'll never forget the sacrifices made.

Running the risk of getting boo'd hissed and run out of town here - but I would like to say that I remember our lost soldiers and have total respect for them, My Nan was German so I also have the upmost respect for my Great Uncle who for over 60 years my Nan thought was missing in action, it wasn't till I started researching our family tree that I found he did in fact have a grave in Latvia. Sadly Nan was too ill once I found it and so she never got to see it but with a massive amount of help from complete strangers I managed to get a photo of his grave from a hotel manager from a hotel where one of our sales guys was staying for a conference (long story - too long to go into here!) She never got to go, but it's on my bucket list to visit his grave and lay some flowers on behalf of my Nan who is sadly no longer here While I realise this is an emotive subject and I could be run out of town for this post, I feel the need to say I also respect those soldiers on the 'otherside' who were also just carrying out orders and also lost their lives. {runs away and hides pretty darn quick!}

It's sad how many people lost their lives no matter which "side" they fought for.

They all deserve our prayers and respect. No matter who they fought for as DiscoDes said. One day I will visit this place and pay my respects, I just wish my dear old nan could have seen this for real before she passed away, i remember her crying when I sent her this photo as she finally found her brother, it was then I realised it doesn't matter which side - the loss is still the same x

wibble ... If the last two major wars have taught us anything, it should be that our 'leaders' are always brought to account before it gets out of hand. We should never, ever again be 'led' into conflict over the ideals of some meglomaniac for their political / personal aims. I feel so much for all those youngsters of every nation, and for whatever side, who were dragged into a situation they could not avoid. WE must not let it happen again. ETA: If we are attacked then different rules apply!
