Rather than replace my last laptop, I have a tablet for out and about anyway, I got a desktop. Much higher spec for much less money and I can have a nice big screen for watching stuff on.

I genuinely have no idea if these sell to the public, as I'm in education in the day job, but you will be very hard pressed to beat these for the money if they do. shop.very-pc.co.uk/laptop/thinbook/thinbook-14Their website says nothing about not trading with the public so I'd guess they do although I could be completely wrong. If not I'm sure they would sell to you via your business. Cracking machines, thin, light and well made. The lid is plastic rather than aluminium which lets it down slightly but, other than that, you get ultrabook sizing for laptop pricing. Grab the i3, 8gb ram and 120gb SSD drive upgrades and they absolutely fly. (If you're on a budget, sacrifice the RAM, but stick with the SSD and i3, far better bang for your buck than the standard build.) Great company to deal with too, 3 year collect and return warranty as standard, bloke from Sheffield on the other end of the phone, no waiting in queues, I seriously can't recommend them enough. Or ofc stick with the Toshiba Satellites, bulky but bulletproof and very well built. As stated before, Lenovo have really upped their game in recent years and their Flex/Yoga ranges of touchscreen laptops are really great, Yoga will be outside your budget but you might just sneak the Flex in there for under £500. The Lenovo U510's are very decent for the money too if you like the macbook rip-off styling and don't want touchscreen. Whatever you do, don't buy anything less than an i3 chip in this day and age and a SSD will give you a very noticeable speed boost for the extra few quid.

I have a tablet, it is hard as hell to use lol. A desktop would be my overall preference, but a laptop comes close second.
My laptop was having problems.
I looked around and asked a few IT experts, and to my surprise it wasn't a top name I got told to get it was Lenovo.
I aint got it yet, because I got working again ,and I really don't want windows 8, but Lenovo is what I will look for when I have to again.

I recently got a HP 840 G1 - and it's great. ~1.7kgs, SSD, 8GB RAM, 14" 1920x1080 screen, fingerprint reader, backlit full-size keyboard. The back comes off without having to remove a single screw, in case it needs a repair. 3 yr warranty. and best of all, it comes with Windows 7 installed and Windows 8 on a disk (which you can install if you want). In use, it is absolutely silent - the fan rarely comes on. heartily recommended.

Desktop= higher spec and more usability, but you can get a decent pappy lol lappy for 300 quid these days, so 500 will be mega, still better spec on desktop though.

Totally agree you can get a terrabite?? I don't know something that sounds like a dinosaur on a desktop for less you pay for half on a laptop.
I don't know why you have to have windows 8 or 8.1 though, I much preferred xp long ago lol.
