I use a trek 4300, its good, dependable and solid as far as I am concerned, and highly upgradeable.

Specialized, Trek, Norco, Voodoo, Boardman and Orange. That budget is a bit on the low side for something really decent, you might pick up an older model within budget. Just make sure you give it a good going over as some of the parts can be expensive.

I know nothing about mountain bikes, but own one for all the off road we get in london lol, one tip, go for as light as possible, mine was ultra cheap but wieghs a tonne and you feel it after a while. My salesman in work is into it big time, your budget would not buy a wheel for him. And if your not doing mountains dont need 21 gears mine uses 6 max then i get confused lol.

I bought a 1998 specialized fsr from eBay last year for £120 , apart from a few new cables and a bit of tlc it was a.smashing buy.
I'll add a pic or two when I get home.

I've got a cube hybrid, forget model but pretty decent. Cost 500 plus though.
Got on a cycle to work scheme so gets paid for outa my wages pre tax, if you can be bothered then these schemes can be good way of getting new bike cheaper and paid in installments.
Put dmr v8 pedals on it, great upgrade as wide and very grippy, got off eBay for about 20 quid.

One of the first things I changed out on my mtb was the pedals I got the shimano spd's which means that my shoes clip into the pedals, one of the first times I went out I forgot to unclip my shoes at a set of traffic lights and I came to a stop and fell over still clipped to my bike, I felt a right idiot

I'm sure Chris Hoy himself said a £100 mountain bike is just as good as anything else, the more expensive ones are like designer clothes Asda, £89 for a full size or £69 if you're a wee shorty
