VTR problem..

Got a bit of an.. issue with the VTR.. turns on/off ok, reads atty ok, setting dial all ok..
But does not fire. (Fire button lights up as if it's working)
Tried- various batteries, on/off, several attys, stamping foot, swearing, ignoring, etc..

Any advice?

What kind of atty are you using?

Tried loads steve, just about anything that'll fit on it (that work on other mods) and others with the extension tube..

Yup, I thought if that was the prob it wouldn't read the resistance??

stick cotton bud on pin and give it a wipe

This isn't going to be much help, But as its reading the resistance then you know that the contacts and circuit from battery to atty are fine as it means a current is being passed along it ok.
This leaves the fire button, and that would seem like the contacts are ok as its registering the 3 press on/off and that signal is reaching the PCB as your getting the green/yellow/red response. It could be the main electronics PCB that is causing the problem.
It may need help from someone with some PCB knowledge and some testing equipment to get to the bottom of it.

Stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice - ronaldo suggested that for my Zmax that wasn't working & it works now, so that's what I think you need to do, mate

Yeah @hijacki can imagine that - when ronaldo suggested using rice - he didn't specify uncooked rice, cooked rice, rice that is being cooked.

AND

he didn't specify what sort of rice - pilau rice, plain rice, long grain, egg fried .... it was so confusing!!!
