When I started, I used a tiny passthru with three voltage settings. It worked for 3 or 4 months before giving up the ghost. All my others still work, a gremlin with my second hand V2 Provari but ZMax 18 months old, FT Vamo 1 year and Roberts Robust 9 months all fine, I've never dropped any on the floor, hardly ever knock them over and use mainly gennys so rarely need to unscrew them from the mod.
So what are the main causes of failure?

Over tightening, over tightening, over tightening, That and dirty contacts........... Be gently with your devices, clean them, look after them and they will look after you.

I dropped my favourite SID about 387 times. The 388th killed it.

My to main causes are dropping or sitting on stuff which I've left in back pocket.

The only thing that ive ever had die in almost 3 years was one of those little ego style passthroughs, after about 2 weeks the switch just stopped responding.... im either lucky or just plain old brilliant.... haha... seriously tho ive never had a problem with anything other than the passthrough.

One of my first ego batteries, the +ve wire desoldered itself from the top of the battery. No way I was putting a soldering iron any where near it. The electronics and connector got robbed for a (still unfinished) project.
My v5 vamo had an unsightly air gap (still does), and in trying to carefully remove the top cap, I yorked both wires off the board - they were relatively easy to solder back on.
Never missed a beat with my m16 and sentinel clones - nowt can go wrong with a sturdy metal tube, really!
Oh, and I borked a chivod when cleaning, by managing to stuff the internal tube ( which I reckon is slightly concave) with tissue!
