I think burning the dry cotton with a flame has little if any relevance to using CW as a wick. Use it dry and yes the fumes are bad, use it right and the issue doesn't arise. each to there own though, now where's my cotton wool

@agenthoover have you ever vaped a tiny loose strand of silica that has come away from the main wick? that can fall onto the coil and heat up and burn within a millisecond? trust me you don't want to vape that strand............ I myself cannot use silica for that reason as it causes breathing problems so cotton all the way for me.......but this is just me and my allergy

CW all the way for me I must admit, although I used to use silica and Ekowool. The difference was so big, I have still got metres of the damned stuff filling up my vaping drawer!

I have only ever scorched cotton at worse, but even if you burnt it or Rayon I doubt its any worse than the paper tubes out tobacco came in. Don't vape silica as I don't like the flavour, but lots like it. I'm all for people having choices and trying to find the lowest risk wick & wire. The one I don't understand is some people like to trash organic cotton balls over non organic, people are just are just paying an extra 30 % (30 p a year ish) for reducing the v small risk of traces of the nasty pesticides.
It's whatever keeps you off the stinkies and they are all likely to be mucho safer than stinkies.

So whats different between sicilia, ekowool, rayon and cotton wool??? Is it just flavour?? Ecowool is posh silica. Silica is resistant to burning, you can dry burn a coil with silica in place if you so wish. Arguable the main attribute of a wick should be it's ability to wick, cotton wool and rayon both wick well. They are also inflammable, but as they transfer juice to the coil quickly this isn't a problem, (In a good build). Another attribute if taste, the wick shouldn't add any flavour, to some silica and cotton do, and that is why rayon is 'flavour of the month' at the mo, many find it clean tasting and doesn't contribute any flavour to the vape

So whats different between sicilia, ekowool, rayon and cotton wool??? Is it just flavour?? Some people or should i say most people say one has better flavour over the other, i really cant tell that much difference tbh,.. Ekowool is a brand name, (Russian) the only difference i find between any of it is how its constructed, silica that ive had is twisted together like string, i used the braided which is ....ermmmmm ermmmm braided construction.....lol... strange thing tho, i have 2mm silica and 2mm braided ekowool and the ekowool is thicker in diameter and seems to be more absorbant and holds more juice, which is why i use it in my ebaron drippers.... i find it easier to handle too.... Btw, Ekowool is still Silica and i can only assume the Vendor sent me the wrong thickness because 2mm is 2mm in any language ... is it not ...lol

He sent you the right size.

No -one else use S/S mesh, then? ( > ducks & runs for cover< ) When I'm not using cotton, in my gennies. I'd have thought mesh may have been a better choice for the OP?
