Take to bits what you can easily. Then (assuming you don't have an ultrasonic dodah), warm soapy water does as good a job as anything else. An old tooth brush to clean off the threads while in the water. Run the lot under running water. Dry 'em off. Bingo!

Test tube brushes are great for getting inside mechanical mod tubes.

innards loggo (as in inside my VTR) - rubbing alcohol and a cotton bud. Sorted. Rubbing alcohol is also good for swimmers ear

Thanks guys. Rubbing alcohol it is. Soap and water, it's just a tube without the battery in anyway. I use nothing but mechs too and that's how I clean them all, works a treat. A nail brush is ideal too to get anything out the threading. So +1 to izan 's method

The only advantage of alcohol based cleaners is speed. One wipe and you're done. I'm quite happy to save a fiver and wash em. Besides, I've got enough stuff locked away from the grandkids. They are dying to get into that cupboard.
