also keep a whistle by your phone and blow it down the phone at scammers, or tell them due to dodgy calls you have the police recording all your phone calls is that ok with them, (worth a shot) As attractive as it sounds, blowing a whistle down the phone could end up with you being sued for hearing loss or prosecuted for assault. They shouldn't be phoning in the first place, plus it's what is advised to do by the telephone companies for nuisance calls

Whistles down the phone are inaudible. The frequency response to capture high frequency sounds so it cannot cause deafness. Better to just put on an Indian accent and claim you are wee Jimmy McDonald from Bangalore and you want to sell them a time-share.

Better to just put on an Indian accent and claim you are wee Jimmy McDonald from Bangalore and you want to sell them a time-share. In that case, I stand corrected. I was led to believe that doing that could get you a GBH charge. So it's pretty pointless blowing a whistle down the phone then?

yup, phone lines only transmit signals in the range of 300 to 3400 Hz. Anything else is not transmitted. So all the stories of whistles, dog whistles etc are just urban legends.

That being the case, what would be the point then?

Reading this thread makes me glad I shut my landline down. I got fed up with the cold calls/ spam etc and I had TPS but it didn't make a difference. I only kept the landline as I had to have it for internet. Best thing I did was switch to fibre optic HS Broadband. On my Android mobile I run 'whoscall' which blocks any crap.
I don't even like having to give a number out when I order goods online as I'm sure they pass the numbers on. So mostly I give out my defunct number.
Disgusting the way they prey on older people.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever 'Eastern European' scam while out shopping.
Simply dropping into Sainsbury's for a bit of shopping has turned out to be quite traumatic.
Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.
Here's how the scam works:
Two seriously good-looking voluptuous 20-21 year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the boot.
They both start cleaning your windscreen, their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts.
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they'll say 'No' and instead ask you for a lift to another supermarket store, in my case, Tesco at Kingston Park.
You agree and they both get in the backseat.
On the way, they start undressing, and both get completely naked.
Then, when you pull over to remonstrate, one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over your lap, kissing you, touching you intimately, and thrusting herself against you, while the other one steals your wallet!
I had my wallet stolen on September 4th,
9th,
10th,
twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, and 29th.
Also on October 1st, 4th, 6th, 10th,
twice yesterday
and very likely again this coming weekend!!
P.S. Aldi have wallets on sale for £1.99 each but Lidl's are £1.75 and look better.

I've had the Microshit call, burst out laughing and told them I had an Apple. Also calls from Yellow Pages plus lots of number withheld.
I now don't answer the phone, wait about 5 mins then do the 1471. If I recognise the number I phone them back from my mobile.

I've also received those "African Lawyer" emails promising me several million dollars if I give him my bank account details.
I usually reply with "Tell you what - send me YOUR details!"

Its best for unsolicited phone calls and emails not to respond if you can, these people create lists where people have answered the phone or responded to an email and then they sell those lists on, a list of emails or phone numbers where someone has responded has a higher value from a list where the person hasn't responded and there is always lot of buyers I have read of one company where their business is just to phone if you answer they hang up and list your phone number as valid and ripe for further calls
