It's the same with emails... never, ever open an email from people who look as if they're from companies you deal with, especially Banks. and have your financial details. Always go to their site, log in, and if there's a message for you it will be there.
I had one today, supposedly, from my Domain Registrar, which looked totally genuine, as I'd only recently renewed the domain which it quoted, asking for 'IMMEDIATE VERIFICATION REQUIRED'. This immediately raised a 'red flag' as no legit company puts titles in capitals. I'm assuming that because I didn't bother this time witholding my details on the 'whois' register some 'asshole' thought he'd try his luck.
When I checked my emails on my phone, where it gives the first part of the email... it was in French! ???

Don't forget to keep a personal log of these numbers so when you do answer one you can ask them to call you back on your home phone.

I used to love getting double glazing calls. After all their talk and saying already had double glazing windows and doors, gutters and drain pipes all sorted, they would still go on. Then a friend said just ask them if they do conservatories and when they say yes say oh good I have been trying to get one for my 10th floor flat.

We've been getting those computer scam phone calls over here in Tenerife. They say they're from Microsoft and they speak with an American accent. We had it last year and again this year. This is how our conversation went this year, pretty recently: Him: Spiel about Microsoft bla bla bla Me: I don't have a computer Him: Madam everyone has a computer Me: Well I don't, don't even know how to use one Him: Madam you do have a computer Me: I bleeding do not have a computer Him: You're a liar He slammed the phone down I know that they don't know for sure if you have a computer because they tried it with my Mother-in-law who definitely does NOT own a computer. A friend of mine actually fell for the scam and he lost several thousand pounds from his UK bank account. The money actually left his account whilst he was on the phone with the guy. He was gutted, he's almost 80 years old and this was just 2 or 3 months ago it happened to him

There is, in all seriousness, a nasty scam email doing the rounds at the moment, our workplace got hit with it today. The title is "Tax Record" and it claims to be from HMRC, with some blah about checking your tax records, 'in the attachment'. Now, this time of year some folk are doing tax return stuff, so could get caught up in this. Remember : HMRC will NEVER contact you personally by email.
It was also spotted in the wild around March, of course, to coincide with the tax year end. Crafty fookers.

also keep a whistle by your phone and blow it down the phone at scammers, or tell them due to dodgy calls you have the police recording all your phone calls is that ok with them, (worth a shot) As attractive as it sounds, blowing a whistle down the phone could end up with you being sued for hearing loss or prosecuted for assault.
