Tried making some cider last year but the yeast failed More than likely the apple juice you used contained sorbate or sulphite preservatives, that kills the yeast. Use the cheapest but make sure it doesn't contain the preservatives. You can remove the preservatives by boiling for 15miins then cooling, but then it's not Turbo Cider. It's call that because it's really quick and easy to make, no faffing about with real apples, no boiling and cooling. and contrary to popular belief it's not because it's really strong. Someone mentioned a still, my mate has this one and he Produces healthy distilled water or this if you Prefer something shiney I juiced the apples myself, added a sachet of yeast like the Instructions said. It just sat at the bottom with the rest of the sediment

Yep i did that years ago, spent all morning picking apples, then pressing them and the same happened. I just drank the juice in the end.

Phil, a few years ago I was big into homemade vino, regularly had 20 or so demijons on the go at a time. One of the books that helped the quest for free pickings was Winemaking Month by Month by Brian Leveret It points you towards what's good at the time eg Mid 2 weeks April- Dandilion August- Beetroot etc Though the best by far was September- Elderberry! I used to get two mashings out of a load of berries sort of like the way olive oil's made.. Good Health!

My answer will always be, steam the blackberries and freeze the rhubarb. I'm off down Northampton tomorrow with my newly acquired £2 pulp master (VF car boot was worth going to) and my press to make some cider

Yep went in June seniorphil, highly recommended. It's 6 brewers but 2 share one brewery. Also went to the Dean Swift and Draft House, which are good pubs really close, on the way back to the station actually. See my pics here I did link to it in reply 17
