My fitness regime for years has been
Going for a run and doing weights ( not bulking up weights ) 5 times a week.
When I smoked it was tough , my chest would feel tight 10 mins into the run, I'd feel very thirsty .
Now I get no issues so have ramped it up ie more reps on weights and more challenging routes for the run ie steeper inclines, breaking the run up with sprints etc.
Feel bloody great .

I can only comment as a long distance race driver with no fitness regiem at all, that when smoking, i'd be literally removed from car by physical force and left dieing for 20 minutes before anyone could speak to me, now I can remove myself and after 5 mins or so recovery can speak. Some consider this a bad thing, hard luck them for talking to me lol.
Overall much healthier, 20 mile bike ride 2 weeks ago no problem (with Itazte around my neck).

A few weeks back I had some uncomfortable chest pain. Having previously suffered a heart attack, I took myself off to see the doctor had blood tests and usual checks done, seemed to be ok but he referred me to the hospital for further tests. I'm just back from the hospital where I underwent an ECG, heart scan and a ten and a half minute treadmill test. Results, ECG normal, heart scan perfect ( well for already having had a heart attack anyway), treadmill test completed with less difficulty, lower blood pressure and heart rate than the last time I did it two and a half years ago. The only change in that time is I am off the stinkies. During the consultation with the cardiology nurse she asked the inevitable question: Do you smoke ?. I replied saying that I used an electronic cigarette. She then completed the form by ticking the "non smoker " box. That is the first time I have ever been referred to as a non smoker and it does give a sense of achievement. I would say this confirms that it does improve fitness and well being, and I can also lie in bed at night without wheezing and the usual chest crackle. So clean bill of health for me apart from ...............well.............eeeerrrrrr ...................can't mind the medical term for it but it's a muscle behind your breastbone that's been causing it, fortunately for me its not the really important muscle in that area that's at fault.
