"amount" it used if the quantity is unknown, where as the word "number" can be counted?

I'm not great at English so not a statement, a question.

A pal of mine used to be a printer in the newspaper business. He reckoned that a lot of the unfortunate headlines were deliberate by either bored editors, setters, etc. to see what they could get away with. It had become a game to them. Nice to see that in the computer age there is still room for a bit of fun.

As usual the BBC explain it better than I could:

"An amount of something is how much of it there is that you can measure."
A "quantity is an amount of something that you can measure or count ... usually applied to inanimate objects"
"We use number to describe how many, and often we do not know exactly how many there are."

A large amount of cows were infected.
A large quantity of cows were infected.
A large number of cows were infected.

The last one is correct.

It's why I didn't say anything, I googled amount of vs number of and saw that you were correct, I was always good at spelling, not so good with grammar even though I went to one

I liked the teen pregnancy one best, one would think it would drop quite considerably at about age 20, but i'm no expert.
