Ok, my friend lives in Montana. She has house cats and a dog, but although she lives in the total middle of nowhere on a ranch people dump cats kind of nearby. There are no neighbours for miles on end so some of the kitties find their way to her property. These become barn cats, ( she does feed them a little though )
Well one turned up in one of the barns, wouldn't let anyone near it so they let it alone. Then babies -

sammy13, your friend needs to start handling them (gently) within the next week or so, otherwise they will become feral.

Oh she has, she says they are barn cats, catch mice etc ( remember these are ranchers who carry guns daily , and have to take their calves to slaughter for money ) but she is soft as old boots with kitties.
Here is one that was born from another mom barn cat not long before the recent litter - my friend had just returned from a 100 mile trip to the supermarket - guess who got the goodies lol -

Looks like the poor little mite needed to get the goodies She will feed them up, I can not understand why anyone gets pets and then discard them, to me that is like discarding a child. They have had a long hard journey to get to her, and then the kitties have to get used to her but she feeds them all. This one was more feral, but she has come out of the woodwork now so will soon be fit and healthy.

When I say the abandoned cats have had a long journey- it is difficult for us in the uk to imagine the distance and lifestyle, but this is just part of their back garden - they go to a section of the garden for a family picnic -

Nice pictures sammy13My Millie was born in a barn to a semi ferral mom. She's a horrid cat. I have to protect the pup from her She was a cute kitty though and I often wonder, due to the markings on her tail, if she is part Scottish Wildcat.
