I've found soaking in bicarb pretty ineffective, it only works when sprinkled on a cloth and rubbed to remove for example tea or coffee stains. But from the same family as bicarb is sodium carbonate, what used to be called washing soda now bought very cheaply as soda crystals.
It's much more caustic/alkaline than bicarb and is a far better cleaner, especially good for de-greasing and breaking down organic matter. Mixable at various strengths and safe (don't use on aluminium though) add a drop of washing up liquid to act as a surfactant.
Oxy clean or other generic type is the modern version of washing soda, (use non perfumed) is also far better than bicarb. You can make your own by mixing I part baking soda, 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts water.
From my experience Milton solution has no cleaning power it only disinfects.

maybe when bubba has finished with it after BLEEP! Well IT WORKED,!!! I never knew I could clean my tanks with bicarbonate! I have gone and put one f the clones in the bath now and am surprised at what is coming off considering that I have been using it for months! Right next project! Does anyone know what I can use to file metal Glad you got it cleaned up Now, for filing metal I would recommend a metal file Sorry, couldn't resist. What are you trying to file ? Metal files come in different shapes (Flat, half round, round) and different grades (Rough to smooth) but some sandpaper or emery cloth may get the job done depending on what the metal is and how much needs filed off.

Micro file from a model shop might do it. Failing that a jewelers broaching tool but they ain't cheap.

If someone has a suitable file I am sure they wouldn't mind bringing it along. Might save you having to buy one.

Oh yes please seniorphil that would be great thank you Will do, I am sure someone will come up with a solution. It's quite normal for someone to turn up with a full tool kit.
