Well I got in tonight to a sorry looking son. He's managed to fall off the computer chair the arms broken and put a tear in the living room carpet.
Google is my friend and it seems it can be repaired with carpet seam tape and a carpet seam iron. Flipping expensive stuff to buy and I can't afford a new carpet for the sake of a 2" tear but it will fray and get worse if left.
Advice appreciated.
Jay

Hope he's OK? Don't really have much advice apart from maybe a rug? I had a friend who left an iron flat down in our living room carpet and burnt straight through! We moved the coffee table in the end, and lost our deposit when it came time to move :@ Hope you get it sorted buddy,

Is it possible to get at the underside of the carpet? If so it will depend on 2 things if its a foam\rubber backed carpet get a piece of off pillowcase\ sheet 100% cotton. Fabric glue and cling film. Coat underside of carpet with glue and apply a doubled layer of cotton then cling film, lay carpet bk down. Apply a little light pressure on the tear only to make sure its sitting even. Leave for 24 hours job done. If its open weave non backed carpet gaffer tape it again from under side.

igual it's a woven, hessian backed I think they used to call it. Getting underneath isn't going to be easy it's pretty much in the middle. I might have to bite the bullet and ring a carpet fitter. I'm sure a good one should have the tools for the job, I just could do without it this month. Jay

Slip some gaffer tape doubled over on to itself in a loop stick one side to a sliced up bit of plastic so you can work it into the hole then push it down. Will do as a temp till you can get it sorted.

Jay, I spoke to a carpet fitter today, he suggested using double sided tape or barring that hessian and copydex..
