Andy, if shutting it down & rebooting doesn't work, do you have any headphones you can plug into the laptop? If so & you get sound through the headphones, then it's your built in speakers that have gone. Crikey I hope mine have not gone Chrissie, I don't have any headphones to check, this is the second time the sound has gone in my laptop.

I have checked the Device Manager audio system and I have all the correct updates, it really is a mystery to me as I have not done anything different other than surf the web. It is Windows 8.1` by the way. Anything else I can try, the last time this happened it corrected itself?

this often the full sound mixer rather than just the volume mixer settings - you should get the option if you right-click on the speaker icon... Yeah, checked that GunJack I think I'll just have to admit defeat and wait until I can afford a new laptop

To be honest, the machine's not worth spending that amount of money on. It has to go back at the start of January, so I'll hang on until I get a new one

Phoenix . as yours is a new lap top & your OS is windows 8.1, it would be best if you start a new thread about your problems as any solutions will most likely be very different to any given to Andy

Thanks charliehorse and thatguy- speakers don't work with headphones in either I'll try the uninstall of all drivers when I get a spare hour (!) and see if by reinstalling everything I can fix the problem that way. I'll keep you posted! Just another random thought on the subject Can you have a quick look through the BIOS settings to check the soundcard is enabled as it looks like an onboard sound card, ie built into the motherboard

chykensaReboot the laptop and look out for a message on the screen somewhere - it will say something like press F2 to enter setup, or F2 to enter BIOS or similar You may have to reboot again to get the timing right. Once you get in DON'T change anything unless your sure It will be a basic screen and its cursor keys to move around the menu system - the key functions will be written on the screen somewhere Look for something that says onboard audio or the like - they are all different so I can't give you exact instructions. If it does say for example "onboard Audio" it will have enabled or disabled next to it, should be enabled of course. If you get into bother in the BIOS choose "exit without saving" If you find the problem and change the setting then "Save changes and exit" Have a look ..... Take your time when your in there though.

That's brilliant charliehorse, thanks for the prompt reply and helpful advice. I know I've delved into the BIOS before, but couldn't remember how I got there! I'll have a rummage and will post back - won't be until the weekend as I have a busy few days! Thanks again!
