As a few of you are aware I've been using a new laptop recently. It's a dell inspiron 1764 running windows 7 home premium. I've always used nero for burning my movies onto disc but since installing it onto this new laptop I'm having difficulties. The discs seem to burn fine but when putting them into a DVD player I either get a bad disc message or some other error on screen.
I've tried three different versions of nero, nero 7, nero 10 and nero 2014 all give me the same results. I've also tried three different brands of decent quality DVD's to burn onto with the same results.
The versions of nero I have used all seem to be fine on my desktop and the nero 10 was fine on my Toshiba laptop which has now been handed down to my son after he dropped his.
I should add aswell the DVD's although giving errors in DVD players play fine on the laptop using the drive they were burnt in. I don't like hooking up to the TV with a HDMI cable and using the laptop as a DVD player though. I want to be able to burn to discs that are playable as I have always done.
So what do you guys reckon ? The only thing I can think of doing now is changing the actual DVD burner in the machine. Or perhaps different software. The different software isn't a route I particularly fancy though as I like nero and the fact it's so easy to add my own chapters with a few clicks and as yet I haven't come across software that is as easy to do this with or even if I can it takes double the time to create and burn the movie. Also nero with the klite codec recognises any movie format and just creates a DVD disc.

decoy DVD+ are not used so much now but I believe one of the discs I used that I had in my desk was from a batch of +'s I bought when my usual a were not available to use in the desktop. So I've actually tried four brands/types of disc. Jay

JayJ Make sure you "finalise" the disc in Nero (or end session, or complete session or whatever term they use nowadays) Un-finalised discs usually play in the computer okay but not in a standalone player.

tbh the only other thing i can think off is your burn speed is to high but it should of set its self in nero
might be worth a try lowering the burn speed
the other thing is there is a setting somewhere for making them multi session make shure that is off
know what you mean about ease of use with nero but i just uses mem sticks now

@johanino I've tried different DVD players to no avail. decoy going back to what you said about using DVD+ I can't be 100% sure the DVD I got out my desk was a + as I mostly use printable discs with no markings. Thing is though I can't buy just a single + disc to try. A new DVD burner would cost me about £17 which is about double the cost of a spindle of DVD's and would probably save more ball ache. I'll try reducing the burn speed first though but I've always used the preset speeds with no problems. Jay

Nero gave me loads of grief with this too, I use ashampoo free dvd software now and never have a problem. You have to make sure and disagree to any terms regarding other crap software they want you to try too lol but yeh, works a treat for me.

enjay I've seen ashampoo mentioned a couple of times while researching my problem. Can you insert your own chapters wherever you want with this software ? Jay

I haven't tried but if nothing else you can do all that with nero or that then save it then use ashampoo to do the actual writing. There's also windows movie maker which is free, I think it can do various things like that.

For video DVD players you need to do a "single session disc" & "video DVD" which is written ans finalised all in one, in the properties there are some compatibility settings, but a new player shouldn't need them. In the early days of DVDR they used to say DVD- was more compatible with video DVD players & DVD+ with computers etc, I have been playing stuff from my server straight to the TV for years now so well out of date.

I've now tried ashampoo and it just wont recognise my files. I go to the add DVD from folders and it then says theres no DVD to add. I'm thinking they're the wrong format, MP4 and Xvid ? It's going to be a bit long winded if I have to convert every file I want to burn to a different format first. Nero does that for me, well at least it did when on a different machine.

I used to use nero, set it to the video setting add content and burn using the plus discs, had no problems apart from the dvd player in the entertainment system wouldn't play them ever, whilst anything else would? Have you tried, yeah you have, was going to say reinstalling nero, but you've tried diff versions, so i'm out, good luck. ps must be something else you can download to burn discs, media player?

Sounds to me as though you've got the settings in Nero slightly wrong when you did the install, I can think of no reason other than that for your problem
