At this time of the year, when the roadside breath testing checks come up with great regularity, I would like to share a personal experience with my closest friends about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from an occasional social session over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before; I took a cab home. Sure enough, I passed a police road block but, since it was a cab, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise as I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage. This is a JOKE Drinking & Driving is NOT please don't do it!

There but for the grace of God etc... i think we've all realised the day after, we shouldn't have done that... but got away with it. Don't do it anymore! Life has a way of evening it up and I don't want to be the reason for a life ruined, or lost.

I'm always mindful of a friend of mine who thought he could drink two pints and then drive the three miles home. 2.5 miles into his journey, he swerved off the road, mounted the pavement, and drove into a lampost at 35 miles an hour. I visit him when time allows, and when it's dry take him our for a walk. In his wheelchair.

and be careful the morning after especially if you're in Scotland where the drink drive limit has been reduced!

Hi DiscoDes, As long as it wasn't a Handsome Cab, you should get away with it.

and be careful the morning after especially if you're in Scotland where the drink drive limit has been reduced! I personally think it should be zero tolerance, some people think oh I can have one drink, 2 drinks etc, but it affects us all differently, however I think they are taking it to extremes on the morning thing. When I was in Somerset , I was warned they were doing morning checks, mainly stopping mums on the school runs, yes they may still have it in their system but there just seems to be so many more dangerous drivers they should be concentrating on catching. How I am still here is a miracle after some loon on the M5, it was like a scene out of a movie, I still don't know how I missed him. My guardian angel was certainly on my shoulder that night.

Some years ago I attended a drink awareness lecture in the local Naval Base. This was held mid afternoon and at the end of the lecture they picked about a dozen from the audience and breathalysed them. 3 were still over the limit from the night before and one guy was double the driving limit. He had stopped drinking at midnight.
The new drink driving limit in Scotland is virtually a zero tolerance level. Just one drink and you could be over the limit. And not before time!

I live in "a dry village". The nearest drinking place is the Bistro on a nearby caravan park, about two and a bit miles away and one and a half miles from the nearest bus stop. The nearest pub is in the next village, 3 miles away. All within walking distance but not roads you would walk on at night. Too dangerous. There is a bus service to the next village but the last bus is 10pm. So the vast majority drink at home and a few use taxis if drinking elsewhere. Drink driving has never been a problem around here. People just do not do it. Or at least no one has ever been caught doing it.
I think the main point I am making here is that those who choose to go to the Pub or the Bistro know when they leave the house sober, that they have to pre-book a taxi to get them home and so there is no point in taking their car in the first place.
The roads around here are dangerous enough with stray sheep and cattle on the roads without adding the effects of alcohol to the equation.
