Having just done my first build on my shark dna40 im finding out the hard way that kanthal is childs play compared to ni200, jesus its effin soft. Just done a .25, 9 wraps round a 3mm coming out at 0.21 ohms and its so easy to mess up a nice neat coil when trying to wick it. Not too impressed with my first go. Not a lot of vapour and its making me cough something rotten. Think i might have chosen the wrong tank for my first go (erl) so I'll have another crack with the kayfun and rose.

thread title "a learing curve?"
Is this where you look lustful at your nickel wire and it'll behave for you?

@windows from my experience with the rDNA I’ve learnt: • You have to be meticulous in you coil building; pay particular attention to ALL connections, especially if the atty post aren’t good. • Check everything on the atty as well, from the pin to the coil. • Check for hot spots and shorts, all these this can fool the TC or even make the unit not recognise it’s a Nickel build. • Be gentle with the nickel, specially the thinner wire, it’s very malleable. • Not all nickel wire is the same, I’m sure there is some sub standard stuff out there. VapingBad will add at least another 1/2doz pointers

You can make nickel much easier to use by 'strengthening' it, basically taking the springiness out of it by threading it repeatedly through your fingers, or if you have a drill, pop one end in the bit, hold the other with pliers, and give it a quick spin - 5 seconds or so does it.
Alternatively if you have ni200 0.2 ohm you can make twisted pair nickel, putting two strands in a drill bit, and spinning the drill while holding the other ends (not awfully tight). The result is even easier to coil with and has the same net resistance as 0.3 ohm un-twisted.

I think it drops the watts because it is reaching the maximum temperature you have set.

The irony of this device is you need the experience and skills to such a level that you would not be getting dry/burnt hits anyhow.

The irony of this device is you need the experience and skills to such a level that you would not be getting dry/burnt hits anyhow. To be fair I can't really disagree with that They need a pre-mastered coil making skill and a good knowledge of how the attie works before you can hope to find success when coiling your own But in drippers the temp control really shines, no more dry scratchy hits With the release of the nautilus coils and other offerings in the pipeline it will bring temperature control to whomever wants it, even the provari P3 is due a firmware upgrade to temperature control. Once the technology becomes more widespread and cheaper to manufacture I can see china getting on board and then it should really take off. From a safety perspective I think that's a very good thing. Personally, I've embraced it all and with practice I've nailed these nickel builds but it did take quite a bit of trial and error and staring long and hard at what looked like perfect coils trying to figure out why they wouldn't fire properly Bring on the next innovation - blakeys waiting

The future for vaping is here now, problem is 1 bit is in your kettle and the other bit is in your boiler...

turn the hit and miss tc off and use with good ol kantal Might as well have saved myself a wad of money and carried on with my 30's if im going to go back to kanthal. All i can say is if this tp is this much of a faff to get a coil up and running right its not going to be the next big thing in everyday vaping

It gets easier @windows and somethings like manipulation your coil after it fitted are easier with Ni200 than Kanthal, if you have a connection problem it will make life much harder, even things like poor through hole terminals like the ones on my Orchid clone. The Kayfun is a little easier with twisted Ni200 than twisted kanthal for me now I have done it a couple of times.
