Basically I'll go with the advice on here as I'm pretty clueless technically. It just seemed that it could do "other things" as well and seemed a great price. However, having thought about it a bit more, I'm not sure how I would connect to it whereas what you're suggesting has the 510 connectors. Having said that, how would I connect to it? Amy ideas?

mikemichelle yes, the DMM can do a whole lot more, a whole lot more than you need. You don't need anything fancy, just something you can check your coils on for short circuits. I don't intend to treat anyone like a dunce, just the DMM has a lot of stuff on it that you will never need. Simply build, test ohms, then use.

My question was a little loaded and Ripshod has pre-emptied my answer. The multimeter can do other things but for checking coils it's much easier to use a dedicated ohm meter as per the FT link above that allows you to screw the coil head onto the unit. If you're in a hurray you can get similar from the UK but you'll likely pay around twice the price.

It just seemed that for under a £5 it will do what I want it to do albeit with some bells and whistles. My main concern was getting something as cheaply as possible as I seemed to have spent quite a lot on my new toys and setting up my new hobby!

It will do what you need it to do, but not as simply... with the ohm's readers, you just screw the head on and hit the button... as simple as simple can be

With say 1 meter of leads (2x0.5) on them I would say DMMs are less accuraate than a dedicated resistance tester. If you're familiar with using DMMs day to day then yes, I would recommend one, but then are you?

It will do the job mikemichelle just not as well. The beauty of the dedicated meter is you screw the head to the meter to check the resistance of your coil and if all is good it serves as a great stand whilst you wick the coil. I have two multimeters and never use them to check coils. If your starting out making coils don't make it more awkward than it needs to be

Accuracy is all over the place with these things I built a coil which on mine read .12 on a mates fasttech ohm reader it read .3 we checked with a multimeter and other ohm checkers and they were all over the place. Mine was most accurate of all off by .02
Its the sigelei from c9v which runs on a 14500.
