If wicking with cotton, you need enough to run easily through the coil, otherwise it will expand with the juice loading and suffocate the coil, causing dry burns and an unusable wick. If wicking with Rayon however, you need it to squeak as you pull it through the coil, as rayon doesn't expand with juice, so will therefore cause a dry burn. Different materials, different techniques, all learned through practice and a few nasty mouthfuls of vapour! If wicking with cotton pad, you will need about 5mm wide strip, and then gently roll it into a tube to feed through the coil. With cotton wool, tease out enough to roll into a sausage and feed through - with practice you will be able to accurately gauge how much to tear off a cotton wool ball, but this is a bit trial and error too.
