hey guys, you may or may not be aware that after 16 years myself and the navy are parting terms...I haven't even started job hunting yet but I have been "head hunted" so to speak with an engineering consultancy company in bristol. this will be a family move so I am looking at houses to buy but I know nothing about the bristol area The job will be in keynsham and the following requirements are: 1.min 3 bedrooms 2.semi detached (prefer detached) 3.max commute to keynsham of 40min 4.max commute to a large hospital of 40 min 5.max budget £250,000 (unless I sold my house in Plymouth which I really don't to to do!) Those are non negotiable, we want to live near a nice school (obviously) and I would prefer to not be travelling through Bristol so North,South or East would be great. This is all about work/life balance, I have spent less than 2 weeks with my 3 month old daughter (not forgetting Alfie) over to you guys....PLEASE HELP

Work in Keynsham live Midsomer Norton about 30mins drive. Good schools in MSN, supermarkets and leisure centre. Reasonable house prices.
Ask if you wish to know anything.

I have absolutely no ideas about the schools or house prices (other than Bath is renowned for being bloody expensive) but AFAIK there are now only three major hospitals in the Bath/Bristol area: Bath Royal United - west side of Bath, difficult by public transport and horrendous for staff parking Bristol Royal Infirmary (plus Bristol Royal Hospital for Children) - very central, 2mins walk from the bus station Bristol Southmead - couple of miles north of central with tricky transport routes; huge newly-developed complex with major trauma dept. I'd back shez's suggestion of checking Midsomer Norton and the surrounding villages but be aware of the flightpath into Lulsgate! Bits of Keynsham seem nice enough, similarly Willsbridge (added bonus of steam trains!) and even Kingswood. Avoid commutes via the A4 through Brislington as it's a nightmare in both directions especially during rush hours.

I'm from Bath, however a good friend of mine lives in Hanham on the outskirts of Bristol. When I've stayed with him it feels like living in a village although there are the requisite supermarkets etc. Worth a look arron

Not sure if this is too late but I am from Bristol and Hanham is a lovely town, all schools around there are good / outstanding schools. Also Longwell Green is a good place for families. Easy access to Bath & Keynsham.

Downend/Emersons Green area would be a good starting point – about 20mins along the ring road to Keynsham, 20 mins to Southmead/BRI hospitals, good junior/senior schools in the area, lots of 3/4 bed semi/detatched houses (Downend more 30's to 60's builds, Emersons newer estate) There's also a few Navy people about (if that maters) because the MOD are just down the road.
