Eclipse. My 2nd DNA40 build

I was quoted £40 to cut the screen aperture igual plus remove one 'turret' and m/c the other 3 down by 2mm so I could fit a rebated lid. oh, and drill the 10mm 510 hole.

It was going to be a drill out and fitting job but I kept asking around and in the end I did the milling with him for the price of a pint or two. I drilled all the holes at home on my battered old workmate with a hand drill.

I was planning this while making my first mod and so far things have gone more or less to plan. My priorities were for it to be compact without sacrificing pleasing form. All main parts to be easily removed for repair or replacement. Use quality components and material. Oh, nearly forgot, a geriatric big screen, only because it’s removable, honest. Now where are my glasses?

I looked a selection of printed enclosures and kits but most seemed bulky with a style not quite what I was after. They didn’t satisfy my desire to design and create a mod, it would just be assembling parts someone else had designed and made.

I decided to go with a Hammond 1550A, it’s quite compact and has a nice form factor being just a few mm taller than a VapourShark but slightly squarer.
I scoured the net for inspiration and have incorporated some of the ideas I came across, as well as some from mod builders on here. I think I’ve come up with a few features that put my own stamp on it.

So having got the machining done I decided I couldn’t live with the casting taper, although slight it’s still noticeable. I rigged up a jig with a tenon block and flat porcelain tile to maintain a right angle, and then worked the piece across some 120-grit paper until it was square. I left the taper on the long sides but worked all 3 remaining sides flat in the same way. The process was repeated with 240-grit paper.



For the brushed effect I worked the piece across the 240-grit paper in one direction only, running it along the tenon block to keep it parallel using a planning action. The radius’s were done freehand with the paper wrapped round a 1" thick piece of armourflex.
Using the same procedure but with a green scrubby gives the final finish.

I couldn’t find a battery holder that would fit, so for the pos + terminal I used some PCB laminated with 0.5mm carbon fiber sheet to insulate the brass screw from the enclosure, and soldered a slightly modified Provari spring to it.
For the neg – terminal I glued another piece of PCB at the 510 end and used carbon fibre sheet with a copper crimp end stop through it as the contact point, this will be soldered to the PCB. A suitably modified battery clip holds the battery in place.

michnig lairey geordie_vaper guys, I'm flattered by your interest but the more I get into this project the more I realise that any thoughts I had of offering this up for sale are disappearing.

I'm spending so much time and effort to producing something I'm happy with that I don't think I would want to sell it, let alone do it again and again, sorry.

I remember when, not long after I joined the forum, I saw a DNA20 build by Super Shiney and thought WOW! I didn't contemplate that I would ever be capable of building such a device. So maybe this thread and the info in it will inspire you to have a go.

Yep, just the short ends VapingBad I'm sure when stood up that if I hadn't done it I would have found it annoyed me.

It leaves the side walls about 0.5mm thick, with the brittle nature of die cast aluminium I was a bit worried the long sides with no support might be easily damaged.

It does mean that I'll have to make a lid, but that's a good thing as I have walnut, mahogany and carbon fiber lined up

I thought it looked straightforward on my twice full size graph paper drawing @windows but it's a bit more challenging now I've got down to it.

I think it'll be good when it's finished so taking my time to get it right.

see you had taken the female thread out in one corner for the battery but didn't notice you thinned the sides. Vaping misses nothing...!

Yep letsavit and the little rectangular cut out in the PCB on the pos + end is for a magnet if one in the other corner isn't enough.

Got some shellac to french polish the wood, not done that since I made my mum a jewelery box during my apprenticeship some... well doesn't bear thinking about... years ago.
