The biggest problem with 8 is that it is optimised for touchscreen which makes for uncomfortable keyboard/mouse combos, it fine when you get used to it, and a LOT less bloated than Vista which was MS biggest blunder.
Its funny, I can remember all these arguements happening when they released Win95 nobody liked that because it was such a departure from 3.1 even I found a hidden option to make it LOOK like 3.1, who remembers Desktop manager, File Manager etc, I still love 3.1

Its supposed to be a free update for anyone on 7, 8 and 8.1 for the first year of its release. To be honest 8.1 is not that bad once you get used to it. Boot straight to the desktop and disable the auto charm bar. I've never been able to get rid of the charms bar Easy way to stop it appearing all the time on 8.1 ....
Right click the task bar Click 'properties' on the menu that appears Click the 'Navigation' Tab Uncheck the box at 'When I point to the upper right corner, show the charms' Click 'Apply'
Doesn't get rid of it entirely but its a start lol.
If you want to stop it appearing when you swipe the track pad or mouse you need to go into Control Panel > Mouse (or) Touchpad settings and see what options you have. Should be something like Enable/Disable Edge Swipes or similar.

Thanks! I'll try those, I did install a patch called something like "Charms away" but they still appeared.

I shall be there, in a shot... oh yes... count me in! I 'heart' Windows. When my next computer gets built, I might even try Windows 7.... MIGHT....

Did a little looking around and see that Win 10 will be a free upgrade to most of us, but can't get any real info about it.
I love free, but free what?
Anyone know?

If as most other releases it will come complete with glaring security issues, and crash regularly

Never understood the need for new operating systems. I started with Apple (can't remember which version) then Millenium, followed by XP and Ubuntu. They have hardly progressed. Only plus is a few useful added features downside is they get harder to get to grips with and need faster CPUs and tons more RAM to do the same thing. My advice, if you get Windows 10, is don't get the pro version, it will have features you never use, take longer to boot and run slower.

Microsoft's latest attempt at a good OS is about to be released to all their beta testers. Once they get all the issues from the feedback sorted out they will announce Windows 11.

I'm going to go out on a leg here I think this will be the best windows version so far....they have to. Any bad screw up in this market could see an end to microsoft. In the past the competition has been few...not any more. Business users wont jump at the chance of a freebie, so they will rely on a much more savvy, personal user market who (these days) get upset very easily. Last throw of the dice me thinks, before all turns sour! Hence...must be the best version yet....(still gonna wait for the earlies to jump first though )

win 10 poor win8 lame win 7 sluggish win vista oh dear win xp ok after a lot of patching win 2k bearable win me worst of the worst win 98 good after SE win 95 slow but decent win nt stable but inefficient win 3.1 better off dead
lets just say i've never liked windows, but at least it's better than CRapple MacOS
Longing for the days of GEM/TOS to return, an graphical OS that was lightweight and didn't crash.
Three main hates about windohs
1. Bloat - Too large and too slow 2. Buggy as hell - HOW MANY patches do I gotta install? 3. What do ya mean I got to have Internet Excrement installed even though I'd rather be a disembodied brain than use it?

The OS i had no issue with just the UI.
