I had been smoking since the mid 80's, and that's the only time I truly smelt a cigarette and thought it smelt really nice. Today's cigarettes stink of chemicals to me, which is a good job or I may still be smoking. It's the smell (and my young twins) that got me on to vaping.

Never paid attention to smokers when I was smoking,but now seems like they are everywhere.And can't stand the smell at all.
The only time I am tempted to have a cigarette is when I watch movie and see someone smoke and really enjoy.

I too never used to notice smokers when I was still smoking myself, but now do make a conscious decision to distance myself from them.
Having said that, a freshly lit portion of tobacco of any variety does smell divine sometimes, but only until the human holding it intervenes; exhaled smoke has a particularly offensive stink to it!

Yeah yourgurnard I love it. Went to Barcelona a few years ago, no ban in bars there, having a drink in one full of smokers was great. So many different cigar, pipe and ciggie smells, the aroma and haze just added to the bustling atmosphere. I'd quit then but hadn't discovered vaping and was sorely tempted.

I can't understand vapers who treat smokers like lepers, I don't avoid smokers, not that I see many around and in my group of friends/acquaintances only 3 smoke. I enjoy joining the smokers for a vape and a chat in smoking areas.

We were out for dinner last night at a Bistro where vaping is allowed.

It was just so "civilised" to be eating, drinking and vaping.

There was 4 people vaping all in, 3 also eating and 1 just there for a drink.

There was also about 6 smokers standing outside and I could still smell the cigarette smoke every time the main door opened to let someone in or out. If it was annoying me, I wonder how much it was annoying the non-smokers.

The analogue smell doesn't bother me, when I get a whiff of it I think "that would have been me not so long ago".

When I first started vaping the smell of anything smoking related - including matches - was a definite turn-off.

These days tho I think I've mellowed. I can't stand the smell of stale smoke in the air or on smokers' clothing. Fresh smoke, from cigarettes, pipes and cigars doesn't bother me any more.

Hate to think what a ciggy tastes like these days - so I won't be trying one

For me, it is not the smell so much as the distance that cigarette smoke appears to travel.

I walk through the usual smokers fug outside a hospital, restaurant, pub and seem to carry the smell with me.

Others entering also carry some of the fumes in as well.

In my garden I can smell someone smoking in their garden two houses away yet if you were vaping right next to me, I wouldn't smell a thing and even when I vape in the car, my wife will ask what flavour I am using as on many occasions, she cannot smell anything.

There certainly appears to be some chemical in cigarette smoke that has a acrid pong that can travel a distance and I feel that it is put there on purpose as an attractant to other smokers.

One thing I think We must n't do tho' is get sanctimonious about smoking....even if the smell does make some of us wanna heave now!....Vapers (or, as My Lad calls Me:- a 'Vapist'!!!...) have more in common wiv smokers than non-smokers.....& I think We have to show some solidarity...esp. as We're now seeing the same petty, marginalising 'rules' appearing to restrict Our Habit as Smokers have had to put up with for years (unless You're in that Catalonian Anarchistic Haven mentioned above!!

I do try hard not to and hopefully don't . . . knowing I could be a vape away from being a smoker again.

What yourgurnard says is very true, to a point, but only now that I am a vaper can I begin to understand just how much smoking was annoying those that don't smoke.
The smell, the distance that that smell will carry, the nicotine stained public rooms that I used to drink, eat, whatever in, to say nought of my own home.

But really, what I don't understand is the reluctance of smokers to make a conscious effort to give vaping a proper try.
With all the anti-smoking regulations that are becoming prevalent in today's society, common sense alone says that vaping is the way forward. Couple that with the cost difference and it is a no brainer.

Yet, all my neighbours have tried cig-a-likes and decided that they would rather stick with their £8 a packet fags.

Nuts or what?

Which isn't a surprise given how pathetic many cig-a-likes are.


Though I know many of us started with them . . . . but you also have to want to make the switch, with some commitment. I guess that's the hardest part for many smokers, so it keeps them on the ciggies instead.

I guess I was lucky in that cigarettes were already giving me problems and I had already switched to Menthol Cigarettes.
When I tried cig-a-likes I found the tobacco taste disgusting, but the Menthol was fantastic and tasted just like a menthol ciggy.
From then on I was hooked and other tastes followed like cherry etc.
Indeed within one month I had said goodbye to ciggies and would have stayed on the cig-a-likes but after 14 days of sookin' my heart out on these, I "found" the Ego & Clearomiser and then it was all systems go.

I saw an advert on the telly tonight for an e-cig that looked like an Ego and hopefully more of these will come on the market and be advertised on the telly. These should wean folks away from the cig-a-like and give them more of a proper vaping taste.
