I'm sure this'll be moved if it's in the wrong area. When I first started soldering I discovered Solder Paste. It's a powder solder mixed with flux, and comes in either a tub (apply with a screwdriver), or in a convenient syringe. No tinning needed, just apply the paste to the join and hit it with the iron. Really handy if you don't have the steadiest of hands. A couple of ebay examples: In a syringe In a tubI found it a lot easier to learn with this then move to the more traditional solder, and I still use it on occasion today

I use a similar item for fiddly silver soldering jobs ( obviously silver based solder and much higher temp) its really handy for tiny bits or soldering in areas that are awkward to get to.

I'm a beginner at soldering and I'm liking the look of that, totally new to me. But then I've only just learned there's a difference between plumbers flux and electrics flux.

Use it sparingly.
