Hot spots are par for the course tim, I like to clean the wire with IPA or Acetone before coiling (sometimes even give a light sand) and then they short between loops on touching coils until you pulse them out. People used to recommend flaming the wire first to remove the springiness, but it also helps stop the shorting, I think that tools like the Kuro that help avoid this are the way to go personally and don't like flaming or torching if it can be avoided.

Thanks. I generally pulse mine a few times to even the coil out before wicking. Most times it works. If not, a *strum* or two helps, but after that, I throw it away and start again. Just wondered if tension would save me time. And wire

That's exactly what I do tim, until the throw it away bit, I keep strumming and pulsing and work any hot-spots or shorts out, unless the coil is poorly formed and then I would not generally fit it in the first place.

Maybe I should persist then. Never made a mangled coil since I stopped using a drill bit. Even then, it was only uneven spacing, but that bugged me..... Now I only micro coil. Going to try an experiment with the Kuro type I have. Modify it to make spaced coils. Have the time over Easter. Should be simple. Spaces give more area with cotton

VapingBadTo my untrained eye this looks reasonably acceptable. It was wound on the 2mm mandrel with 0.3mm Kanthal using finger and thumb for the tension. Jim

I was just experimenting Jim ( jevans) and I do think that winding, as opposed to wrapping, under tension makes the best micro coils, but it's not necessary to make them that way. How this one in 0.8 mm Ti (what Vape Atomiser Mesh co thought would be a good size, recently saw a post where they were trying to sell extra springy Ni200 ), I digress, but wrapped this under tension by tapping one end to a screw driver and attaching the other to a shelf, it's so long to get it to 0.5 ohm. You can go one better and wind onto a second former so the bend is in the same orientation.

Very good VapingBad , talk about the n th degree! That coil is massive, must take 5secs for it to warm up and cool down. My coils work well enough for me, so think I'll stick with them. Jim
