About to put a load of music on Itunes (from cds) and I've had my mac 4 years (white macbook pro). It has mavericks but started out with 300gb harddrive? and now only has about 50gb?
Have considered reversing OS X to Snow leopard but decided against it for multiple reasons
Would it be wise to get a cheap say 64-110gb memory stick and shove all my music and photos on a load of those?
Or should I reverse to snow leopard?
Can't get hold of mac guy so any ideas appreciated?
Jane

An external hard drive would be the simplest solution @johanino. You can pick them up for not a lot of cash and they normally work out cheaper per GB than a flash drive. They have a higher capacity and are much harder to lose. Portable ones are small and light enough to carry around as well these days

What thatguy said. also if these are to be your only copies consider a further backup elsewhere. if you want a decent amount of free cloud storage try mega.co.nz or dropbox but you get far more storage with mega. personally I wouldn't go back to snow leopard as other software you may use has likely been optimised for the newer operating systems. Also if you are thinking of spending the money on an external hd then why not consider spending that on upgrading your internal hd to 1TB, plenty of storage then and it's straightforward on a MacBook

I already have the memory slots full kermitthefog and would it be easy to play with to increase the internal storage (I think, l ike I said, it has 300gb? Maybe 200gb?) Easiest option I think is flash or staples for 1tb/500g Ta folks

I think iCloud is quite expensive depending on what you need. That link to mega in my previous post is a good option but you will have to drag and drop what you want to store there. So iCloud is more convenient but is it worth the cost for a little effort on your part. Also I wasn't talking about your memory slots before, I meant replace the hard drive itself, and once swapped you can use your existing one as an external hard drive so plenty of storage, you would just need to buy an internal hard drive and an enclosure. Just food for thought.

kermitthefog I have spoken to my mac guy about your suggestion. Not cheap for a decent SSD but so worth it to upgrade macbook and keep it alive for another 2-3 years I have various links to share for this escapade www.ifixit.com - for finding out how to do it (and of course fast tech for tools ) and also (got to find a link) - carbon copy cloner for shifting the entire contents of old HD onto new HD also the following tip with wee screws (gotten from the chap who told me about fast tech back in the day) Draw outline of computer on A4 paper and push screws through to avoid losing them so you know where they goThis is so going to happen My budget for a new laptop was £200 so this will save a few pennies and cause me to keep Mac OS x - will allow 2 whole days to do it Thankyou Jane

No problem, it will feel like a brand new MacBook if you're going for a SSD, they are amazingly fast compared to standard HDs. in terms of cloning you have everything you need within the operating system already. Disk Utility does have the ability to clone your hard drives just as well as any other software out there. 1. Select your new volume (indented) and click on the "Restore" tab. 2. Drag your old volume to the Source field 3. Drag your new hard drive to the Destination field. 4. Click the check box for "Erasing Destination". 5. Click restore at the bottom and it then will start copying over to your new hard drive. Hope this helps

Will practise the cloning on external drive and go from there . Sure I can do this Thank you so much for all thy help . So far the only £ wasted is £15 or so on a 64gb flash drive and £5 (think the flash drive was £11?) thingy for my mobile? (something to make transfer from memory stick easier) but sure that'll come in handy sometime My aberdonian me says the external drive was a waste - what???!!! It was not £50 - it was £30! Reality check needed! Sure these things will come in handy Jane

Hi @johanino an ssd will make a huge difference to you mac. (I have an iMac as my main machine which is now 5/6 years old and still running) Plus one for Mega from kermitthefog, also look at Hubic and Copy - Hubic has an offer for €10 per year for 100Gb or €50 per year for 10TB. All of them have mobile apps, and none of them are based in the US. Having said that Dropbox is brill. Nick EDIT - I have put links into the two cloud storage site - they are not affiliate links, but like most of these site you can get more storage if you use special links

The macbook is fixed! It may be fossilized and white but it now has a new hard drive Carbon Copy Cloner made it so easy (i got the trial) though I forgot to format the new drive before hand 4 hours later - all copied 1 hour after that - in my macbook 3.5 hours after that I make my peace with microsoft and reluctantly go and get the new DVD drive (cos mine died on me this am! ) from the hall and reinstall microsoft office And I'm over stimulated LOL Anyone want a coffee?
