Unfortunately we no longer have my grandfathers medals as they were stolen from His emi nursing home just before he passed something I'm still seething about to this day. My other grandfather was a train driver ( essential job) however he did get a Piece of brass on his chest called the George medal I think and was for bravery after his train he was driving from London to Dover got bombed, he pulled 30 soldiers from the wreckage.
I used to love listening to the stories from my grandparents.
One night during September 1943 a German bomber on its way back from I assume London dropped its remaining bombs on a little village called herstmonceux. My nan was a land girl working on the family farm. They had heard the ack ack guns and seen the flashes etc so headed to their air raid shelter, was about 2am when the earth literally shook and part of the shelter roof collapsed. Thankfully they were all unharmed. About 5 am in the morning they extited the shelter to assess the damage. They had a fairly big dairy and combined pig farm. They immediately went to check on the cows as a bomb had come down between the barn, house and first bit of the fields. After a headcount they realised they were missing a couple of heffers. Unfortunately they found what was left of one scattered round the crater. After they had finnaly calmed the remaining heard down they wandered round to the front of the house to get food and wash up. The site that greeted them was something my nan would chuckle about whenever she told this story. Remember the missing cow well it was on the roof legs splayed pretty much either side of the roof top and half in a hole it had made. Totally uninjured but very confused as to why it was nesting on a roof. By this stage she was normally laughing uncontrollably. Took them a good few hours and lots of local help to get said cow down safely.
